A woman in my neighborhood heard that the average person has 300 negative thoughts a day. She didn't believe that could be true, so she purchased a clicker / hand-held counter and made a click each time she had a negative thought for a week. At the end of the week she was so depressed that she stopped working out, and felt just awful about life. She then decided to flip it and make a click for every positive thought she had during the week and had nearly the polar opposite effect of the first week and had never felt better at the end of the "positive week".

I was driving to California last week and my daughter dropped her Minnie Mouse doll and started to cry because she couldn't reach it while she was buckled. My son tried cheering her up by telling her "Don't cry! It is a GREAT LIFE! It's a GREAT LIFE!!!" and I have been thinking about him saying that a lot this last week.

Coming back from California on Saturday my kids were sick and my wife was in the back of the van holding two containers (one in each hand) for different kids throwing up in those containers at the same time, and I again thought "It's a GREAT LIFE!". When I got home I took the car seats over to the car wash and used the pressure washer to spray off the car seats and some of the remnants of what was thrown up splashed up on me, not to mention it was freezing cold. I know this sounds crazy but I again heard the voice of my son saying "It's a GREAT LIFE" and I was struck with such happiness. I know on paper it doesn't sound like good experience but it is so awesome to serve your kids and love them so unconditionally.

So what has made me happy today, is just being a Dad. It is the greatest blessing. Before having kids I had done some awesome things (visited more than 30 countries, tour guided in Alaska for 7 years, played hard in Utah, scuba, etc.) and I have found that there is nothing better than being a Dad.

Making it to work this morning without an accident or sliding off the road.

I bought a new car recently, and I was worried there was something wrong with my car because of the way it was sliding yesterday. I have seen icy conditions, with black ice at certain intersections, but that was the first time I saw black ice over all of Utah. It was crazy! There was an accident at every intersection from where I got off the freeway to where I arrived at work.

http://cheezburger.com/7066700800

In reading the comments one of the people accused this story as being "another example of modern culture in which kids aren't allowed to be kids, but they're supposed to already be little adults and enjoy all old pop culture references." Then that person posted "Thanks heaven, this is fake."

The first part about Cinderella's Fairy GodMother Darth Vader, turning a pumpkin into Lightning McQueen and her freaking out about it really did happen. That guy apparently thinks I am a jerk, but the next day my kids were asking for yet another story told incorrectly and they laughed SO hard.

What has made me happy today? The reminder of how much I love being a Dad, and that my kids are so awesome! Granted much of my kids awesomeness comes from their Mother, but I love that my kids know they are loved.

I know you changed jobs this last year and moved up to Salt Lake. Does your new job allow you to be on the computer more? I was honestly thinking about this recently that it seems like you have been the most enjoyable recently that I ever remember you having been on the site. So I wasn't sure if things were just going really well in your life and that happiness is reflecting in your posts, or if your new job allows you to be online more, or what. But I genuinely have been enjoying your posts a lot recently.

That's really rather flattering....and ironic. I've gotten very introspective lately...dunno why.

Sr. VP Technology with a local technology/services company. Formerly CTO with a local life sciences firm and for the past 6 months, consulting CTO for a VRI services company (software development & hosting), and that role will be ongoing.

You and I are in the same industry and this is a small state.

I knew we were in the same industry, but I didn't realize until just now that we are now forced to be enemies :lol8:. I find that there is plenty of room for IT Companies in this state, so I am unconcerned with us being competitors. I hope you love your new job, I have really enjoyed my new job. IT is kind of a funny industry. Some days I think "I can't believe they are paying me for this" and other days I think "they aren't paying me enough" :). Overall though, I love what I do and I hope you do as well.

Today a mission critical harddrive failed by an app developer and the developers was "backing up" his work to the same harddrive on which he has been working. I tried to get the data off with a cable I have which converts internal harddrives to external harddrives but the harddrive would only stay powered up for 2 or 3 minutes at a time. I put the harddrive in two layers of zip lock bags and froze the drive. After 3 hours I pull the harddrive out and it has just finished (nearly 6 hours later) transferring all 200GB of files to my workstation. I have used the freezer technique before and it has usually worked for 10 to 45 minutes, but this was the first time that it has ever continued to work so well. I literally received an award and a small cash bonus for saving the day. I love it!

Great job. The freezing technique has worked for some time. The alternative is to pay a data recovery company $4000 to extract the bits from the platters. I've been there..

Very doubtful we are in the same industry as to be competitors. My new company has a fairly limited niche' and has a solid offering in that space. You're in the Utah valley, as I recall, and there are no cpanies in this space there.

Just remember, Utah is very small. IT is even a smaller space. Being in an executive IT role is even smaller. All of us chat, all of us compete for the same resources, same jobs, etc..

I've never been successful with freezing the hard drive. I have, however been successful with knocking it around with a hammer a few times as it's spinning.

I have recovered data lots of times by freezing drives. This is the first company that has given me an award for it. It really made me feel appreciated and that is a very refreshing change from some places I have worked.

What made me happy today???? Had my L. Kidney removed 2/12 due to interior tumor - Dr. sz over 80% it's cancer. Saw him today for first time after surgery .. Sz he had good/bad news ... the good news is that I didn't have cancer after all.... Bad news, is that he took out my kidney !! - Mixed emotions, but all in all, I made the correct choice based on info I had at the time. Appears this kind resembles cancer and the only way it can be correctly diagnosed is to yank the Kid out.. Yea ... Im happy.. No Cancer !! I beat the 80% odds !!! :stud:

Ya, you COULD shoot the dog, but your face would be on front page news as a "dog-killer" and felony charges filed. You could kill an 8-yr-old with your car an get off with manslaughter, but if you kill a dog yer goin' to jail. What a F***ed up society we live in....
