If you only could do 1 canyon in Utah next year what would it be? ( I would like an idea of amazing canyons to do before my LDS mission )

Depends on your experience level. And time of year. If the water is reasonably low, Kolob or boundry are two good ones.

Jihad, but you might consider that cheating...

Skill level Alcatraz canyon but I'm willing to do easy potholes and multiday canyons any time of the year

Actually, I think Kaleidoscope aka Choprock would be high on the list, as the quintessential Utah Canyon.

I'm also a fan of Canyons with long narrow sections. note: I have a 70 M climbing rope ( that im willing to use for canyoneering ) a 200 ft static rope and a 150 ft pull cord

Imlay and South Fork Choprock are certainly up there. I haven't done Heaps yet though, but it's #1 on my to do list.

Thus, the question is, what is the VERY BESTEST canyon to do, within your competence range.

I'm thinking Shenanigans would be a good choice.

C'mon down to Freezefest, we'll show you a good time.

My favorite canyon is usually whatever one I did last because it is the freshest in my mind and emotions.

If < 180 lbs, yes I agree. Shenany doen't really compare to anything else, IMHO.

If > 180 lbs, go check out Middle Leprechaun. It has some of the best long, narrow stuff around.

You won't feel cheated if you choose Middle Lep over Shenany, guaranteed.

Ditto that.

I have never done Neon Canyon, and that is high on my wish list for next year. Expecting that it might rank high up the liost after doing it. I've been doing several in the Moab area lately; some of those have become favorites. Want to get back to the Zion area next year, as the whole entire Zion area is one of my favorites.

But my all time favorite canyon has to be Mystery in Zion. It was one of my first ever, and has so many good memories attached to it.

DO Shenany! No question, you will love it unless you are 4 feet tall. :haha:

@RAM (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=183) informed me that Freezefest will be from "Dec 26th - Jan 3rd or so" this year.

Also... as I get older "who" I do a canyon with is a lot more important to me than "what" canyon I do.

Agree. (I meant to qualify it that way.)

Link up your Shennany trip report, Bob. It is really good - a classic!

(uh, I guess I could do that:

But of course! Eleven years running.

Assuming no germ-fest and all bones intact, I plan on being there the 26th, and going strong through new years.

Am I the only one that thinks this best canyon talk is silly?

Shenanigan - Choprock - Imlay - Heaps...... and are those canyons any better than Pine Creek - Subway - Buckskin - little Wild Horse - The Black Hole - Larry?

Toss a rock..... it's hard not to hit a great canyon adventure that you will remember for a lifetime. Trying to decide what is the best canyon is like arguing over who makes the best lover... Blonde - Brunette - Red head.

I think that an important part of the canyon experience is your canyon partners. I remember canyons by who I was with and the group dynamic.

Generally, yes the "best" threads are silly, but Levi is asking an honest question before he goes away for two years. We have to assume his mission won't be served in Hanksville.

If you could only have one roll in the hay before your two year hiatus, you bet it would matter. Which blonde would be more fun? Jenny, Jakie or Suzy? Not such a silly question now, is it?

I'm still not buying it....

Trust me on this one.... I'd find a way of pulling off the hat trick.

I know how hard it is to find the best canyon but I'm just trying to get an idea. I'll be coming to freeze fest as far as I know. but im not staying for new years eve. I'm wondering if we do canyons on the other days before new years eve / the run down of events we do.

When do you leave for the mission? Choprock, the Squeeze, and Kolob are all killer awesome, and, in the right conditions, are within the of almost any intermediate canyoneer. I'm willing to help you get some sweet canyons in before you go.

Canyon's have names, our emotions as we pass through them do not:

Swimming through slots sideways because it rained the day before...
Wondering if you really can escape that that formidable pothole...
Coming around a corner in a dark watery slot not seeing the exit...
Looking at what appears an impossible climb out...
Dodging fist sized rocks sent toward your helmeted while belaying your friend...
Looking over the majestic beauty from the highest point in Arches on a clear day...
Listening to a friend squeal as she manages a 6 foot down-climbs into a dark cavern...
Seeing the sunlight sneak into a 400 foot deep slot...
Standing in the rain watching waterfalls appear all around you...
Wondering if there is a more beautiful place on the entire planet...

In Zion I love doing Spry. Probably been through there 10 times in the past 6 years. Boundary is another beautiful canyon, especially in the autumn. Not Mindbender is another favorite in Robbers Roost and Leprechaun middle fork is always fun. If you are at Leprechaun, Adobe Swale is up the road aways and has some great views.

Stray captured canyoneering amazingly in this post. Goosebumps...sniffle...

My favorites in order of preference are: Pine Creek, Bluejohn (down east, to Ralston site, and up Main),The Squeeze, Lomatium, Larry, and Choprock.

I don't know where that canyon is, but I would also like to go someday. That being said, I've learned to ask for beta that I honestly intend to use, so I'll wait before asking about that one.

I belive that Eric from that site is @Shaggy from Bogley. If you are serious about going, send him a PM and he might tell you. He is a super nice dude.
