Happy Thanksgiving to you Americans, in return!

Question from an outsider:? Why do Americans say "Happy Holidays" as a generic term, when you should be saying "Happy Thanksgiving" or "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Independence Day" and so on?

Here in the UK we don't say "Happy Queen's Birthday" or "Happy Guy Fawkes" or "Happy Remembrance Day", but we certainly don't use the term "Holidays" to encompass all of the above.

Genuine question: Why do Americans say "Happy Holidays"?

In short, to be politically correct and not hurt the feelings of others.

IE. Merry Christmas might be offensive to others who don't believe in Jesus Christ, etc. Therefore they will call it happy holidays, etc instead.

I think it's absurd personally, and still call the holidays by their proper name.

From a kid-centric view of the world when you had at least the whole week off from Christmas to New Year's, Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings made perfect sense at the time. Then the kid grew up and the 1040 tax form and instructions would show up the day after Xmas and it was strictly Bah, Humbug.

Genuine question: Why do Americans say "Happy Holidays"?
I always thought it was because Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day all come in quick succession. The plural of holiday = holidays, hence Happy Holidays. :)

Some for convenience, and others want to be politically correct. Although I think the "movement" to stop saying Christmas for religious reasons has started to decline, so people are starting to say Merry Christmas more often now.

Silly political correctness. But most people have realized how ridiculous it was and have grown up.
