I just bought an AR after a ton of research and well as consulting with my Father, who knows more about them than anyone should, I wound up picking up the S&W M&P sport for under $650.00. It lacks the forward assist(completely unnecessary for my uses) as well as the dust cover over the ejection port(not using it in the Middle East so not a concern there). They use a new coating system instead of a chrome lined barrel much like Glock has been doing since the 80's so longevity is certainly not an issue. Dollar for dollar this is the best out there right now. For a slightly higher price and adding back in those missing options that the Sport lacks, the former owner of Bushmaster(now owned by Freedom Arms=shit quality) has started up a new company Windham and is priced around $800.00 for a very high quality rifle. I would stay away from DPMS, Bushmaster and Colt as they once had a great reputation for quality but todays products certainly don't show their heritage. There are a lot of options out there under a $1000 but none that I felt like gave me a better gun than the M&P Sport.

On a side note, if you are going to load your own, I have access to about 40 hrs of round development for some great loads.

Hmmm... I'm thinking maybe I should add an AR to my collection in case of a zombie or Democrat apocalypse.

Keep the info coming. I'm also a fan of .223 as I have a couple cases of .223 ammo sitting around the house.

Do you have any experience with the Sig? I have a Sig pistol and love it.

The Sig is a great gun but the addition of the gas piston system adds weight and complexity to a weapon that is already proven to work well with it's current operating system. Don't get me wrong, I have owned and built half a dozen AKs(one of the worlds most popular and reliable piston operated weapons) and love them but the addition of the piston system to the AR platform seams like more marketing than necessity. Check out Rock River Arms as well, lots of options to chose from to get the platform you really want. I would have considered them for my purchase but the model I looked at for the price range of the S&W Sport didn't have a chrome lined barrel.

I was told the the Sigs are a proprietary system (only sig parts)
While all the others are interchangeable.

I apologize Kurt, the purchasing it for you was a poor attempt at humor as I would never seriously persuade anyone to break the law. I guess I got a little too excited when I saw this...But, if you buy something up here in No Utah and are heading south, I do know a great spot in Santaquin right off the freeway that you could make sure it functions properly. I'd be happy to supply the ammo as I've got a bunch that needs to be shot up.

I don't have any experience with the Sig rifle, but I do have a P229 that I bought years ago and love the workmanship and quality. I'm sure anything with the Sig brand is superb. On the other hand, if parts are not interchangeable, that most likely would be a game changer as one of the biggest selling points to the AR platform is the ability to interchange uppers and accessories.

Prices on those LE6920's has gone down down down since they overbuilt and dumped them onto the market. Great rifle for the money.

Have always liked this chart, even if a few years old (note the prices! You can pick up an LE6920 new in box for around a 1000 bucks!):

Pretty well vetted rifle.

I spent a bit of time searchin' around on the competition forums, 3 gun, tactical, etc. If folks are going low end, they start with a Colt as their base rifle. Pretty good out of the box. See AR15.com, etc.

Loaded up 100 rounds--LC cases, CCI sr, hornady 68gr hpbt, 23.5gr H335

It shot quite well after a little site adjustment, 50-300yds

Now I'll get a scope on it and break out the chrony.

Wanting sub moa groups.

This load was mostly cause I wanted to shoot and refuse to pay $20 box.

At least I have a safe starting point, no signs of excess pressure.

Did I mention these things are FUN.

Just ordered a shell catcher, picking up brass sucks........

Starting to get a handle on this gun. It is exceeding my expectations for accuracy.

I've only shot reloads out of it, I started with H335 but couldn't get anything inder 1 1/2" reliably.

Went to Varget and much improved.

The target with 4 groups on it, I rotated each time I started a new string.

So far 200 rounds down the pipe.

All groups with Hornady 68gr.HPBT

I bought my 5.56 / .223 AR yesterday, at Cabelas. I was split between the Sig M400, the Colt and the cheaper DPMS Oracle. For $300 less, I opted for the DPMS. I figured that via CheaperThanDirt.com, I could use the $300 to retrofit the DPMS. I just ordered some new hardware today.

I borrowed a retired police chiefs CMMG .22 conversion, holy crap is that fun and these guns feed the .22 ammo great and suprisingly accurate.

Takes a whole 20-30 seconds to install/remove.

What range did you shoot at? Makes me think I need to toss a few downrange into some paper m'self. Used to handload for .223 and still have a few rounds kickin' around.

I'm afraid it's too late for me, I cleaned and started remodeling my reloading room, went out and bought lots-O-bullets,brass, primers, etc.

Just back, the CMMG conversion had 2 jambs as I was firing rapidfire at the target.

You tube videos show tighter groups with more premium ammo, this was cheap bulk .22lr.

Still a lot of fun

This was from 50 yds, I was holding the cross hairs on the very top of the target.

4-groups, not quite as good as previous but this gun will shoot sub MOA all day with this load. 2 groups, shooter error prevented nice grouping.
The group labeled 1, the first shot out of my cold/clean barrel was high, the other 4 were good.
The group labeled 4, my third shot I called a flyer, other than that a decent group as well

As before, I rotated the target 90deg. each group. So the picture here, shows shooting group 3

So tomorrow, I will have my optics delivered via UPS and my AR will be complete (quad rail forearm, optics, light, front grip, steel front & rear sights), so I'm going to take it out and shoot it with both .223 and 5.56 rounds. Is the shooting area to the North/West of Utah Lake open again after the Dump Fire, or do they still have that closed off?

My alternative is Lee Kay, as Dougs Shoot'n Sports doesn't allow the .223 or 5.56 in their underground range and my truck won't fit in the parking lot at "Get Some Guns & Ammo" on State Street! :ne_nau:

DPMS AR-15 in 5.56 purchased from Cabelas for $600, then outfitted with:


-Iron front sight by UTG
-Two color reticle 4x32 scope
-Laser
-Front grip w/flash light
-6.5" quad fore-arm
-5x 30round Magpul magazines
-~1000 rounds of 5.56
-~1000 rounds of 2.23
-Some other stuff I had to take off for the scope (grip handle, front iron sight, etc)




I'm now into this AR-15 well over $1000.

After mounting the scope, I went out to the west desert to zero it in. Oddly, this scope took me ~40 rounds to get it to zero, but afterward, every shot was within .25inch of center target. The next day, my laser red dot arrived, and I promptly zeroed that to the scope; I haven't yet had a chance to confirm the laser though.
