The first snows have fallen in Cumbria, so I took a short weekend to see my mate Steve in the Lake District. Steve normally runs here (he's a fell runner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fell_running) of sorts). However, with me in tow, we walked.
He and his lovely wife Wynn live on the eastern fringes of the Lake District National Park, where few tourists venture. We started at Haweswater and climbed past Small Water up to Nan Beild pass and Harter Fell. We returned via Longsledale, and encountered thigh-deep drifting snow which hid the wet bogs from our eyes (but not our feet!).
Our ascent was only 2500' or so, but a glorious mornings hike.

Above: Well above the snowline now, the views extend at least 60 miles in the autumnal morning sunshine

Above: It was only a 2500 feet jaunt, but we were back home to a full English breakfast to replenish the calories! What a wonderful morning!
