View Full Version : KTM 300 I think I want one.

I think I rode my next bike. We did the Bear Lake loop again today and we had a couple of 300's there. Light, nimble and lugs like a 4 stroke wick the throttle and you better hold on. Absolute dream to ride. Made my WR 450 feel extremely heavy. One surprising problem though, one of the 300's boiled over and the other was extremely hot on the steep single track climbing out of Bloomington Canyon (Dry Canyon Trail). None of the 4 strokes seemed very warm? Rode one out of Snowslide and it pulls like a race horse. Impressive rides. If you only didn't have to deal with the mixed fuel problem. But after today I may be willing to put up with it.

Mark

They are the new thing for sure. Actually the old thing now returning. I'm saving my money for the Husa TE300. Pretty close to the same thing. I'd love to ride either.

That new 300 is fuel injected with an electric start right? T-2? Or too dam smokey for the tree huggers and our future?

I love the smell of two strokes and even if I bitch about how they sound just like bees, We all grew up on one or the other and the things they have done with them now is very impressive for sure.
But they have always been quick and nimble if set up tight and just plain fun.

Then came the four strokes with great bottom end power that most latched onto somewere along the line.

Now two's are doing what they never could and at half the weight.

But atlass them dam tree hungin basturds will never understand.:ne_nau:

KTM makes bigger tanks for these two smokers. Lots of aftermarket options too.

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 09:14 PM
Yeh your dad has a tank that puts mine to shame.:lol8:

Oh I may dish on the two strokies but they are a big hit in places.

One thing for sure is you just can't beat their weight and explosive power.
And now days they don't have to be wound up like a friggin freight train to get the job done. A lot more workable power to them.

Mtnseeker1

In all honesty I'm not sure how I feel about fuel injected two stokes.
If your of good understanding of how injectors work as a base line it goes like this.
360 fan under high pressure to go from atom size to ? the point of entry.

Now with all the contamination that can and will happen with mixing fuel they must have a closed oil and fuel circut to accomplish this right?
In other words the guy that mixes his own fuel will never keep it clean enough for injectors.

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 09:36 PM
I guess what I don't understand and I'm sure there is a good reason for it.

Is why does KTM have tons of options for fuel tanks (desert style ) but Husa seems to me anyways be struggling with this. I know they have them but my hell they are just not the same as KTM in any fashion. Is this just the design for short racing?

It's not that I'm trying to knock the bike but from what I have seen and the little knowledge that I have I am a bit lost to this.
Seems like the marketing fell short a bit to me. If they they are the all around go to bike that I'm hearing of.

I can only guess that it is a FI thing.

Are you serious? This is a photoshop thing right?

Mtnseeker1

So can't you just do the over the front but slightly bigger style tank? Or does this offset to much?

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 10:30 PM
Ok now I knew you had a better plan59781

This is a much better design as far as I'm concerned

Helps with the weight balance and trail comfort thing.

accadacca
10-03-2012, 10:40 PM
All those tanks are really available, but yeah that subframe design is best.

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 10:44 PM
The thing is acca my brp with the stock 2.53 gln tank can get me 90 one day and 45 the next pending on what I'm doing. But the 90 is a big push for sure.
If I am 5th gear and not rasing hell I can get agout 55 maybe 65 out of her.
If Im just trail riding super mellow and seeing some country I can get 85 ish maybe 90.
But If I'm running and gunning hard core I can run out of 2.53 glns inside 50 mles easy. And have eaten it up in 45 miles before. IN THE SAND.

Thus this brings me to the super tanker 6.3 gln tank that you have seen on her. THe big bore bikes can really suck it up if your on the throttle and you know this with your 525.

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 10:51 PM
Now I don't know for sure but my YZ with a 3.1 should be good for about 120 miles and my 6.3? Well ?,Does it really matter?

Anyhow I really did not mean to steel the steam from the 2 stroke world but I am hoping to get together a real dirt ride way over into NV. Sometime for the Bogely folks somehow, Some way,Some day.

But I worry about fuel on these pretty bikes mades for trails. :)

PS I'm fond on the Beta bikes myself.

Mtnseeker1
10-03-2012, 11:17 PM
Holly molly I just was sure you where messing with me. DaKar I'm guessing on those um well a hmmm tanks for the rear???????????
Can you imagine running them empty on a kick but trail only to come across a mad river and then get floated away like a chunk of ice in the spring?:cool2::lol8::roflol:
So sorry I thaught for sure it was a photo shop gagg just turned around:lol8: Forgive me for my, Well? ME.:bandit:

Dude I was thinking there is no way that this could be real. I just knew that the pict was turned around and chopped big time. LOL
Just goes to show you never know.

I have been visiting dealerships today. XC or XCW? Several guys I know went with the XC and geared it down to match the lower first of the W. XC suspension is a bit stiffer. Have other buddies that have XCW's. So which one?

Mtnseeker the 13 is carbed. No fuel injection.

Wow, my first pic upload... :). Good question on the xc vs the xcw. This one is an xc and for tight lugging I love it. It's gotten hot on me once (on the high line trail) no problem doing the TOI.
I've had a 250 exc and a 200 exc... The xc does struggle a bit maintaining long sustained faster speeds (IMO)

Nice to see someone drinking the smokin pumpkin juice :)

For the riding we do, I would say the xcw. That wider ratio allows for the granny gear all the way up to a highway gear. That's just my opinion. For what it's worth. Either way, I hope to see you on it soon!

I think xcw would be sweet. I have been thinking of getting a newer one with an electric start (mines an 06). I've put a LOT of work into it though. Made it street legal, full oem wire harness, I have 3 tanks for it. 2 seats. The nice trail tech x2 headlight (which rocks). And some other things.
I am sure a bigger clutch cover would help with the overheating.

And I am forever grateful. I still won't put a giant tank on my bike. They ruin any sort of inherent handling and power. Pushing 100hrs on my bike and never a fuel range issue since.
It just requires planning. Now if I had the money to get an XR 600 like yours, I would use it for a long hauler. I just can't do that to the Husa scalpel. It would be blasphemy.

Rode Hobble Creek today. Both the 300's tried out their recluses, they were in heaven. One of the guys that rides with us is a bit older then the rest of us. He rode substantially faster with his new setup. He couldn't believe how much it helped him out.

I had a chance to ride a KTM 200 and 250 2 stroke while in Green River. They were older bikes, but ran very well. I don't know how anyone rides them in the tech stuff. There is NO bottom end. They are a hoot when they're wound up though! And very light compared to my Husa (only when picking it up off the ground!). I am interested in seeing what the new generation of smokers are like. As it stands now, I won't be riding anything but the 4. I see a heated thread starting soon......:angryfire: jk. I just makes me respect the guys who ride them. Except for NelsonCCC.
