View Full Version : Conditions around kanab in Winter

Hi There,

I have spent quite a lot of time all around the South West and am now putting plans together to do the area that I have missed in the past. Namely the area around Kanab, including North and South Coyote Buttes, White Pocket, yellow Rock, Rimrock Hoodoo's...

Three times in the past ( in April, July and August ) I have tried and been unsuccessful in getting an internet permit to the wave. I am thinking that mid-winter might give me my best shot of being successful. And if successful, possibly walk-in permits might also be easier to obtain.

Assuming I am successful in obtaining a permit for January I only plan to book tickets to fly out from London a few days before as it is pointless flying half way around the world to find the Wave / access road snowbound... Getting to the wave and viewing it with sludgy snowy footprints down the middle is not something I am keen on...

I will also book permits for South Coyote Buttes at the same time.

What I am trying to understand is what the weather is normally like in the area at that time of year? I assume winter light can be quite spectacular at the start and finish of the day, but is it historically very snowy at that time and that elevation...? Any places not recommended at that time of year...?

Anyone know any guides who dont insist on a minimum of 2 people for everything... I would be happy to have companionship on my various forays and contribute to gas, etc but would not be too keen to have to pay for two people...

Any comments on my strategy here...? I would prefer to come in June to be honest, but chances of winning a permit at that time of year to The Wave is ridiculously slim..

Thanks for all advice and commentary in this regard!!!

Dezzouk

Hello Dezzouk, from Rob here in sunny Leicestershire:

I have done those trips that you decribe in the winter, and have never had trouble getting walk-in permits.
