Its name is enough to send CEOs into cold sweats, which is why the rest of the mobile world spent last week (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-motorola-roundup/) announcing (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/watch-now-amazons-kindle-press-conference-ready-to-be-relived/) their hardware back-to-back to steal a march on this handset. Now, after all of therumor (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/iphone-5-the-rumor-roundup/), speculation (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/wsj-2012-iphone-to-support-global-4g-lte/) and leaks (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/01/next-apple-earbuds-potentially-sighted-in-vietnam/), Apple's sixth iPhone (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-officially-announced/) has finally been unveiled in San Francisco. We've got around 45 minutes before the world begins idly speculating about next year's iteration, so let's spend what little time we have delving into what's changed between now and the last time we were here (http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-vs-iphone-4-the-tale-of-the-tape/).

Gotta love the karma....

HTC and Samsung Will Sue Apple over iPhone 5

Looks like Apple infringed on two key 4G LTE patents. HTC and Samsung will immediately file (http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/09/12/htc-and-samsung-will-likely-sue-apple-over-iphone-5) to block import of 5 and the new iPad for infringement.... And a judge has already decided that the patents are valid.

I am off to buy the Galaxy SIII. People are laughing at my Blackberry. :haha: Next up in a few months is an Ipad. I find myself squarely on the fence with all this technology. I refuse to pay the Verizon rates and AT&T has dead spots in my home town. So, the choice was quite easy. To buy an unlocked i-phone would be over $700 and I don't trust the stuff off KSL.com based on my own lack of knowledge whether the thing was jail broke correctly or not, etc.

I didn't know this until now, but my friend who has a iPhone 5 already was saying that the adapter (to convert it from 9-pin to 30pin) will not be available until October, and that Apple is going to charge $39.99 for it!!!! :eek2::eek2: It will also feature a chip that will encrypt the data so a cheaper 3rd-party cable is not likely for awhile.

My friend was saying that he will need to buy at least 4 adapters! One for his car, one for his cubicle homeradio set, and 2 for home. Sure he can keep an adapter on it all the time I suppose, but this feature should of have been native. 4x$39.99....quite expensive just for an adapter. $160 bucks. I'd be outragged - but then again, IOS users shouldn't mind too much should they. Premium phone with a "premium" adapter? :haha:

The price on the adapter alone would make me think twice about getting the new iPhone.

The sad part is the phone could have had a USB port like the rest of the world, but that is not the apple way.

True, its expensive. You shouldn't be surprised though, we are talking about the most expensive phone out there right?

I like the new connector (surprised? :haha:). I had a Mophie case on my 4S and so I would plug that into a micro USB at night to charge both the case and the phone. It was a pain trying to figure out which side to plug in and I almost trashed the case a few times. Garbanzo did that with his...tried to force it in there and pushed the connector inside. The new iPhone plug will work on either side. :cool2:

The battery life has been a little suspect for a power user like me though...

I heard the new plug won't do video transfer?... true? Or BS?

if you think buying an adapter is steep... Think of all the hotels, fitness centers, etc... that have installed the apple 30 pin hook ups to accommodate their clients. Millions and millions of dollars to be made/extorted.

It’s OK to use an iPhone. There’s nothing wrong with being scared of technology
--Steve Wozniak (Co-founder of Apply)

“My primary phone is the iPhone. I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do.” He also said that the navigation (natch) and voice control on Android are superior to their iOS counterparts, with a surprisingly particular jab at Siri:

I have a lower success rate with Siri than I do with the voice built into the Android, and that bothers me. I’ll be saying, over and over again in my car, ‘Call the Lark Creek Steak House,’ and I can’t get it done. Then I pick up my Android, say the same thing, and it’s done."

Smartphone Camera Shootout: iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S III vs. iPhone 4S (http://mashable.com/2012/09/30/smartphone-camera-shootout/)

Final Thoughts

Regarding off-the-camera results, we’d have to give the edge to the iPhone 5. Still, the Galaxy S III was a joy to use and its large screen functions as a fantastic viewfinder.

iPhone 5 sales not hit by Apple Maps woes: Analyst

According to the report, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu has stated that the demand for the iPhone5 continues to be high despite the under-par Maps service present on its operating system. “Sales of the iPhone 5 have been unfazed by the Apps Maps debacle, according to analysts. Demand for the new phone apparently continues to run high, as supply-chain manufacturing plans remain unchanged, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. Apple still estimates a ship time of three to four weeks for the iPhone 5. Complaints over the many mistakes in Apple Maps have surfaced since the app debuted two weeks ago. But Wu sees this as a short-term problem, and one that may have been unavoidable. Since Maps is software-based, the analyst is confident that Apple will make the program "more powerful and refined" over time. Google Maps has been touted as a better solution, especially since it was kicked out to make room for Apple Maps. But Google's product had its own growing pains, Wu noted.”

The analyst stated in a research note, “People forget that Google Maps started out inferior to Yahoo Maps and Mapquest. From our understanding, Apple had no choice but to produce its own Maps as Google wanted to keep turn-by-turn navigation unique to Android. We see this as short-term pain for longer-term gain.”
