OGDEN — If it’s real, it’s just a b-a-a-a-d idea.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is attempting to verify the authenticity of a photograph posted on the imaging sharing site www.imgur.com (http://www.imgur.com/) that purports to show an individual in a white goat suit mingling with billy goats on Ben Lomond Peak.

“I want to get with the photographer to determine the validity of the photograph,” said Phil Douglass, conservation outreach manager for the DWR.

The date and time when the picture was taken as well as the photographer’s identity is not listed on www.imgur.com (http://www.imgur.com/).

However, Douglass said that last week Frank Howe, a Utah State University liaison for the DWR, received a separate report from an individual who claimed to see a person in a goat suit near Ben Lomond Peak.

If the sightings are true, it’s very dangerous for the individual to be mingling with potentially aggressive billy goats, said Douglass.

“Goats have killed people before,” he said. “You always need to use caution when near wild animals.”

In addition, a goat hunt will begin in the Ben Lomond Peak area in early September. An individual in a goat suit could become a target for hunters, Douglass said.

“It’s a bad idea all the way around.”

Douglass said while he’s heard of sportsman disguising themselves as animals, such as a Canada Goose or hiding in camouflage hunting blinds, he’s not aware of anyone donning a goat suit. It’s possible that the individual wears the suit to photograph goats or to scout them out in preparation for the upcoming hunt, he said.

Anyone who has information about the photograph or the individual in the goat suit is asked to contact Douglass at 801-476-2740.

OGDEN — The photographer who says he took pictures of a man in a fur-covered goat suit crawling on his hands and knees near a wild goat herd in the hills near Ben Lomond Peak has come forward.

Coty Creighton, who is the design director for JDHgroup based in Ogden, told the Standard-Examiner Thursday that he took the photos on the morning of July 15 while on a hike about a half-mile north of Ben Lomond Peak.Creighton said he was alone when he spotted a herd of goats. He then saw what appeared to be a larger goat having trouble making it down the hill.

"I thought it was a deformed goat," he said. "It was clumsy, not nimble."

Creighton took binoculars from his backpack to get a closer look and was stunned by what he saw. The figure, about 200 yards away, wasn’t a goat after all but a man dressed in a fury goat suit, he said.

In addition to the goat suit, the man was wearing a cloth mask with eye holes cut out, what appeared to be black paper-mache horns and leather gloves, said Creighton.

"He was on his hands and knees, crawling along the mountainside," said Creighton, adding the man didn’t have a backpack or photo gear but may have been taking pictures with a small cell phone.

Creighton took photographs for about 20 minutes before the man in the goat suit spotted him.

"He stayed on his hands and knees and stared back," Creighton said.

Creighton said the encounter was odd and frightening, adding that he decided not to confront the man and continued his hike to Ben Lomond Peak.

"Something was definitely off with that guy," he said in an email to the Standard-Examiner.

OGDEN, Utah — State wildfire officials have identified the man who has been spotted dressed in a goat suit among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of northern Utah.

In this Sunday, July 15, photo, a person is seen in a goat suit in the Wasatch Mountains on Ben Lomond peak outside of Ogden, Utah. AP

Phil Douglass of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Monday the mystery man is a 57-year-old hunter from Southern California.
Douglass told the Standard-Examiner that the hunter called officials and provided enough information to put their curiosity to rest. Douglass says he didn't ask for a name.

The man told Douglass he was preparing for an archery hunt of mountain goats next year and testing a goat suit. Douglass says the hunter came to Utah because he heard it was easier to get near goats for training.

The man described his suit as a hooded painter's uniform and a fleece.
