I've seen photos of a small cliff dwelling in Zion NP. Anyone know where it is?

Lower Parunuweap Canyon, but it's closed to the public.

There's another one in the main canyon but you have to know exactly where it is. I'm confident that the park service is very careful not to draw attention to it.

Oh I know, I had a real hard time finding "Shaman's Panel" in the Grand Canyon. The Rangers claimed it was a classified heritage site. I was welcome to visit, but they wouldn't share the location.

Although I will admit, it made finding the pictograph panel even more rewarding.

Hmmm, where to start?

Thanks

The one in the main canyon is a granery and not a dwelling.

Still of interest ;)

I need to find it and photograph it.

Any clues as to where to start looking?

I believe it's at the bus stop after weeping rock/observation point. Can't recall the name sorry, but it's the one where you see the backside of angel's landing if you look south. Start walking down the road and stay on the North side of the canyon. It's pretty high on the cliff about 500 feet down the road. Keep in mind though I haven't seen it myself, but a couple people I hike with have pointed it out to me from the bus... Good luck, I don't think it's hard to find :2thumbs:

The granary was rebuilt by a scout troop 20 years ago, so what you are seeing is a reconstructed ruin.

Anyhoo... from the Weep Rock Trailhead hike north (up Zion Canyon) for approximately 200-yards. Look east (right) and you will see a huge alcove (false arch). The ruin is locate at the base of the north abutment of the arch.

The ruin is easy to see from the road (I always look for it when riding the shuttle) and is best viewed using binoculars.

I have never actually hiked up to the ruin and I know the park frowns on anyone doing so. Someone told me there are signs just off the road saying area closed or something like that. I don't know for sure. You should be able to get a descent picture from the road with a tripod and long lens on your camera.

I have no clue what the "restoration" consisted of. But I like natural, which is why I like cedar mesa more then Mesa Verde.

Here's a picture of the alcove with granary looking down canyon. I never knew about it until Kurt pointed it out to me.:2thumbs:

Thanks. I do have a good camera/lens and will surely find it now.

Per the Park Service, it's closed to visitation. I've asked about that one directly with Zion staffers.

I have visited it. Its indeed in the main canyon. Begin your search near the Weeping Rock parking area.

The ones in parunweep are awesome. I once found some info about it and the documentation process. A bit of a sneaky hike but worth it.
