Video Codecs

I have decided that I need to download some video codecs. The problem is that when I go to web sites to do so, I keep getting the hairs standing up on the back of my neck and don't trust them. Below are a couple of links from the same site that I know many have used, but it requires a "downloader" to be included and I just don't like that idea. K Lite I know is particularly popular and I included an additional site that lists it. Do any of you have a source that you trust for this/these?

What kind of Codec, for what type of file and what media player?

It has potential for malware for sure. Just depends on the website. It's good that you saw the potential for harm and asked instead. It may be legit or not. I personally don't like downloaders or "install this first" type of software to get the program. That's usually how freeware makes it's money (go figure, right?) is by bundling and including the Bing Bar, Ask.com bar, downloaders (which installs bloatware, etc.)

If you need codecs (to make .mkv and .mts, .mp4, etc.) to play through Windows Media Player I would suggest using CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). Just do the standard or normal install, and when you are done with the install, it will ask you if you want to re-register the filters and click on the box or yes (I forget which one it is). That should be all you need.

But like Sombeech said, depends on what extension (.avi, .mkv., .mp4, etc.) you are trying to play.

Don't get the Klite codec pack either, stick with CCCP.

Its not general playing that I need help with. This is all part of my continuing quest to experiment with different video editors. I downloaded a trial version of PowerDirector and keep getting the error "....could not construct the media source as a graph..". I don't remember asking it to make a graph, but anyway my search on the web for a solution indicated that I need new codec(s) and one site recommended klite. But, as previously posted I could not find a way without downloading the page's downloader and I don't even let Amazon put their music downloader on my machine.

I don't have enough energy to spend a great deal of time trying to get the trial version to run just to see if I might want it so I believe I will throw in the towel on this one.

However, thanks for the tip on the good player and I will use that anyway.

I use powerdirector and have never downloaded a codex or seen that error message.
