Any tips for capturing the eclipse with a point and shoot camera?

I have a Canon S95 and was wondering if there are any settings I should try to get some neat shots?

Any info appreciated!

You can't really shoot it without a filter, I know Kurt made one from Baader Film. You still might be able to get some in your area. I procrastinated so I'll try to pick up a pair of the special glasses.

I've done at least sunset shots a bit. With no viewfinder, I'm not worried about scorchin' my eyes...

Be hard to shoot through a filter with a point and shoot?

Maybe you should be more worried about scorchin' your eyes!

"The part of the eyes that are injured don’t have pain receptors, so it won’t hurt, but you’ll go blind," the planetarium’s Jarvis said. "It’s called solar retinopathy, and it burns out retinal cells. I’ve talked with plenty of people who looked at the sun and now can’t see in the center of their vision, only peripherally."

Again, my camera doesn't have a viewfinder. So, if I'm aligning the shot and looking at the screen, how exactly is that going to hurt my eyes?

Please...en-light-en me...ha ha.

I've read on several forums that at least non-full on sunlight won't hurt the camera sensor. Anyone know? I've shot into the sun a fair bit, and, camera seems fine.

Where's Dan R when I need him?

(Hi, this is Scott's secretary. What he meant to type was "I'm blind. The red quote blinded me!")

Well, I'm glad I reread this one. SOLAR eclipse. Sheesh, until ON7's pic I was thinking we were about to get a LUNAR eclipse. EVEN though it is clearly in the title. I'm an idiot.

Yea, Brian, if you had some baadar film, you could tape it over the front of your P&S.

Heres some recent shots using baadar on my dslr

I'm an idiot. Old No7 I'm glad you posted your pic. Not just for the info, but without the wakeup I would have been out looking for a LUNAR eclipse. I need to pay better attention and hopefully that will overcome the idiot part.

We took a lot of shots, too tired to post any more but from the top of Cedar Breaks it centered pretty well.

Good one, Kurt. We watched it from Kolob Terrace and it was almost perfect, too.
