Knee and Elbow Pads

Most of the canyons I have done have not required a lot of stemming. I have a trip planned to a couple of canyons that have a lot of stemming and am wondering if there are particular types/brands of knee and elbow pads that are preferred for canyoneering.

Any recommendations?

I recommend a knee pad that is soft and padded in front (instead of the rollerblade style ones with hard plastic protecting your knees). Also, I recommend the kind that pulls on and doesn't have velcro straps. I got mine at Wal-Mart for $5 bucks (I know, I know).

I use McDavids. They are made out of neoprene and absorb very little moisture. They also fit snugly so will stay in place. I use the deluxe version of knee pad in the winter. It is longer than the regular version.
Goo the stitching around the insert to increase the life of your pads.They can also be worn inside out to increase their life span.

If I think I am not going to be doing much high stemming I use the McDavids that don't have the sorbothane insert on the knee. They are less expensive and not so restrictive.

I don't recommend the hexpads. The last I looked at them they have a thin stretchy nylon covering the insert. The canyons will eat that up pretty quick.

I use my elbows and elbow pads much more than knees. And bought some used lacrosse elbow pads from Play it Again Sports for $10 that work fantastic. Cover triceps and part of forearm.

I tend to use McDavids or similar, and lately I've been coating the front with some Aquaseal (or similar) before use - they seem to be holding up way better without compromising performance.

I use the same ones. But I put one on above the one on my elbow for real abusive canyons. Helps to keep some of your skin at the top of your arms. I have also bought some football pad shorts with hip pads in them. They are the dream. Also the neoprene shorts from Wal Mart rule.

I like the Mc David hexpad elbow pads for dry canyons. If you paint the outside with seam grip they will last quite awhile. Same for the kneepads too, actually.

In wet canyons I like to use a McDavid neoprene elbow pad.
