Went thru Keyhole and Pine Creek on Wednesday. They are full of COLD water.More swimming in Pine Creek then I had ever done. Rented Dry Suits from Zion Adventure and were glad we did. Great weather and a great day.

Did you get done with Pine Creek around, say, 3:15 or so? Spent the day up at Little Jenny Peak above Gifford Canyon, came down the switchbacks and saw a group that looked like they were finishing up Pine Creek at the second switchback. If it was you, gave you a quick thumbs up in approval :2thumbs:

Do you think keyhole specifically could have been done without any suits?

I would not recommend it. The water was painful on your hands with gloves on. It is chock full of water.

I won't be going till around Apr 20 now, so time to warm up the water in both.

Small world. Sounds like a fun trip. Incidentally, I was back in the area on Friday and ran into a couple of guys putting on just wetsuits to start their descent of Pine Creek. Made me cold just looking at them.

Thanks for the recommendations on the wetsuits. It has been so long since I have done Keyhole and it seemed so short, I wasn't really on planning on them. I forgot about the possiblity of renting them. It was so hot here in SLC, I think I was confused into thinking it was summer. :haha:

I am hoping to take 3 noobs through this weekend.

I don't think I have ever been in Keyhole when the water had "warmed up". The only time I did it without a suit was when it was like 110 in St. George that day. It is short but the water is COLD pretty well all year long.

Guess I've had some luck. Both times I went through, last in July 2010, I barely even got my shoes wet.

In canyoneering, that would be BAD luck! So much more fun, when wet and cold.

We (me, 12yo boy, 10yo girl) went through Keyhole yesterday. It was wet and cold. I was just fine in a wetsuit, but the kids were cold in wetsuits. It also took us a little longer because I was lowering the kids at each rappel and teaching downclimbing. I did not remember there being 4 or 5 rappels in keyhole. It was my first time back in a canyon in quite a while, so I had a great time. The kids.... it depended on when you asked. :cold:

Hopefully I can get this to jump-start me and I can start doing the adult canyons again.

Thanks Tom! The kids were impressed with my copy of Zion Canyoneering, personally signed by the author. I think I will be getting one of your new ropes to try out, even though my 200ft 8 mm is still in really good shape.
