We are planning a 2 day ride St George on Jan 20-21 (Fri-Sat). So far, myself, Double Moo, Accadacca, maChete and one other are planning on coming down (pending schedules, permission and such). Plan on meeting (both days) at the IHOP restaurant at 275S Green Springs Dr in St George at 9am. We haven't decided exactly where to ride as of yet, so any suggestions are welcome. I would like to try out towards the AZ strip off the end of Washington Fields road (SouthEast) of Warner Valley. I know MtnSeeker will show, and I appears that BlakeC and friends will be there at that time, so we can hook up with them if they'll have us. LET"S RIDE!!!:ride:

I'm in. South east of warner you say?
The red line heading south is about 31 miles from parking area by the water tank.
The green is a 75 mile loop that looks like it will take you up on the cliff and south then back off the cliff and back around to the red line route. This green route is the Navaho Trail or part of anyway.
It would be about 136 miles if no mistakes are made in navigation:). Looks like big roads with maybe some tech. getting up and down the cliffs. I have not road this myself.

I wouldn't mind doing a longer ride one day. That's the type of riding I used to do...200 mile loops. :2thumbs:
Although I don't have quite the range on this bike...

This is the area I was talking about, and I agree on doing a longer ride. The only issue is fuel. I have the capability of carrying an additional two gallons (2 one gallon plastic tanks) on my rack, but that won't help everyone. If we can abbreviate this route, that would be cool. Maybe 100 miles? Or we can figure out a way to carry more fuel. Keep looking at it and see what you can come up with. I really like this area, I just haven't been out that far yet.

KTM extended range tanks...

That's 5 liters total add... or 50 plus miles!
Laugh all you want. It's cheap fuel storage for the occasional longer distance ride. I wrecked hard 4 years ago (broken pelvis, ankle, and dislocated shoulder) while having extra fuel strapped on like this - bottles were unharmed... and tape still holding them in place - I wish the bike had fared as well as the fruit juice bottles!

Oh Hell Yeah, Were there's a will there is a way :lol8::lol8::lol8:
And the way I see it we can ride what ever you boys want. I mean I can ride this area when ever I want but for you guys coming down from the great white north and all.:haha:
I do think nelsonccc (sir never falls less you see him fall) is going to be pissed at me. I think he's trying to put together a Grand canyon over nighter on this weekend. I have been hounding him for months on this one.:naughty:
I did however try to get him to push it up for a Full Moon experience.:cool2: But I think that is this weekend coming up. It's almost like committing to two rides at the same time. BUT this one was set in concrete first so I'm in.

If you decide to do a big ride out here one day I could always take the truck out and stash a couple of 5 gln high octane cans somewhere along the route and fetch them back up later. Course if there is anyone on a two smokey we would need some additional info to make that happen.:lol8::ne_nau::naughty:
I could always leave a note that this gas is for a group in long distance moto desert training. Lmao.
The little Mt Trumble School House is about half way.

The snow thing is pointed towards nelsonccc and I think Kelly Point is were he is talking about if he's coming out of Gold Butte.
Which by the way could be a great trip with a little light gear camping.
He is kinda of talking the same weekend of Garbanzo's envite, But I was pushing the good weather we have now in high hopes of talking him into doing this under the full moon this weekend. I mean come on it is the Grand Canyon and should be seen in the pale blue light of the full moon LOL.
Makes for good camping memories and some photo ops.

Hit an area west of warner with a different view today. 360 degree views.
Top Left- Zion in the fold above the sand dunes that flow over the cliff.
Top Right-The new highway that serves the airport- the new mx track is just behind the white sand area over the hwy.
Bottom left is the area south east of were I parked and is in the direction of the School House but you can see the poiunt of Seegmiller towers.
I parked west by southwest of the Black Rock pictographs and road over to the route that goes in the back side of the Fort Pierce Wash. Big ass whoops with quick turns and other obsticles enterlaced.
There is so many roads and trails out here that I will never explore the half of them.
Makes the country bigger than it truly is.
Enjoy it while I can but in 5 months it will be so dam hot I'll be crying for a little Paiute Trail stuff or maybe American Fork single Track or?????????

Skyline Trail from Ogden Canyon to Mantua, Utah. Farmington Canyon, Utah. Malad, Idaho. Highline Trial from Fish Haven, Utah to Soda Springs, Idaho. Lots and lots of really good Mountain rides for sure. American Fork is certainly a favorite.

I'm looking forward to some I tried to ride with at the Paiute invite but never really met yet.

I know of a small area like this that is hell when dry but if you can catch it in early spring it is a wheel standing soke fest. Half a mile wide with 6 or 7 little rivers at about 4-7 inches deep going on. (Beaver Dam Wash) about march.
I'm sure nelsonccc knows what I'm talking about.
But it can be very hard core in late spring or cloud bursts/ flash floods.

I may have another guy that is interested in coming along here locally.
He is the owner or part owner of the 8ball motoshop here. Nice guy and I'm sure he rides well.
I have him mounting a new shoe on the rear today and he offered to take some time Sun. to help me dial in my race Ht. and suspension out at warner with his family.
He was telling that his wife is doing thirty foot table tops. Not everyone can say that.
Plus I think he knows the rides out there very well. A+ for us. Think those elusive single tracks.
Oops the shop is hard8 nit 8ball. MY BAD.

Now let us ride brothers.
I can't ride for crap but I just can't help but to get exited to get out and try.
It's funny that no matter how bad your day is and no matter how messed up your head is, It only takes about 5min of riding to put it all behind you. And keep it there............................................. ........
Thank God for two wheels and some real throttle.

Garbanzo. Let me know if you want me to stash the cans.
I think that if somebody can pinpoint with google and GPS with just in case type stuff we can make this work if you would like?
But to be honest I would rather find some single tracks now that I have this minus 100 lbs thing going on.
If it is a big ride I'll stick to the big bike but if we do the fun stuff ( and that's why I got the YZ ) I 'll be happy just trying to keep up.
Just let me know.
You know me . It's all good.:hail2thechief: Well short of getting roosted.

I'm good heading out towards the AZ strip in the area of the loop you posted. We can find some new ground. I can carry an added 2 gallons, so I could help 2 other bikes extend range. Acca is chomping at the bit for a long ride:crazycobasa:, so I'll get with him tonight to discuss it. IF YOU have an area you think all will enjoy, by all means, post it. If you want to stash cans and do that big loop, that would be great. Either way, I will let you know.:2thumbs: And I like the new nickname "Garbo".

Honestly the area I posted I have not riddin.
But as long as we know were the gas is stashed and better still can get to it then we can adjust to just about any route I would guess.
If I was any good with a gps this would be much easier but if I have to put this together we may not be coming home.:lol8:
My GPS skills are,:lol8: well zero.
Don't get me wrong I want to do this and will stash the gas but I think we need to fine tune it to make it work.
So how many are coming and how much gas to stash? I only own two 5 gln cans but if needed I'll grab 2 more?

One thing to keep in mind is in Arizonia, The county roads you need to be plated.
I Think as long as your not on the main roads (like the ones that run directly to the Grand )there is little chance of trouble for those of us that are not plated but I did have a run in with the Fish and Game this fall out there.
FEDS as in BLM have a map that shows certain roads that are legal but it seems the great state of Arizonia has other ideas as to how this works.
I for one do not want to drive clear around the Grand Canyon to prove that I was obeying federal laws.
I've come across hundreds of BLM vehicles with no worry but when I ran into the State vehicle it was only during their deer hunt season.
Kingman for me is twice as far as Vegas.
In other words it would cost more to fight than to just pay up.
Just another money making sceem.
I think they're still pissed about the lack of Feds on the Mexico border.
In fact they're trying to impose a toll between St. George and Mesq.
It will never happen but it does give them something to bargain with on capital hill.
Reminds me of the dirty tricks that S.U.W.A. uses.

If you guys are okay with dirt roads then we can put together some great loops out on the Arizona strip. If you stick with the smaller 4x4 fire roads you can have a lot of fun. I'm not opposed to a day at Warner or a longer trip out of st George.
There's a loop I do out of the back of bloomington up onto the hills overlooking the gorge. Then we can swing east on some pretty sweet roads and make a big loop. A don't think there will be any snow up there. There wasn't a few weeks ago.
There is some absolutely superb riding available at coral pink sanddunes. With one exceptional 40 mile loop. It even crosses the east fork of the virgin a few times if we're not afraid to get wet. In my opinion it's some of the best riding this time of year in southern Utah. It's very similar to logandale except a little bit more wide open and lots more sandstone.

After I got home and looked it up in Google Earth I realized were I messed up. I should have gone south when I passed the High Power lines.:lol8:
Maybe having me take gas out there might not be such a good idea:lol8:
I think planning any trail ride should be left to the guys with experience.

OK KIDS, let's make this easy (especially on me!). MTN SEEKER: Plan and post the Friday ride. Make it a full day and you decide where we are going. NELSONCCC: Plan post the Saturday Ride. Same thing. This way, we get the Northern boys to some new areas. We will be ready whenever, just name the time and place to meet. If you want to meet for breakfast, I would suggest 8am, or 9am if we are just meeting at the trailhead. Let me know if this works for you. Just pick any ride you want to do and we will go with it. I am sending a link to this invite to my friend for her to pass on to her husband. Janet and Chris moved from Glenwood Springs this past summer to open Russo's NY Style Pizza (they are also friends of abirken). Anywho Chris rides and I don't think he has had a chance to ride his bike since he moved here. Partly cuz their place is really taking off and he doesn't know the area well enough to know where to ride. Not sure he will be able to make it but I will remind him Friday when I see him.

Its up to you. As long as you're comfortable doing so. I have ridden this area (love the shelf section at 4:00min). I have done that a couple of times. I'm not sure I would find it again very easily, but if we could get a map of the loop, we could enter it into a gps unit. Think about it. I did try but i am having a hard time with this beta vs. mac thing. I'm just a Dam Romper Room Drop Out.:lol8:
But then again maybe I'll stash some cans out south east. Any idea as to how much fuel we may need and how many riders that may need it? Guess if we know there is 10 glns. out there and decide we need more as the ride time comes we can always come up with something to make it work out.Or maybe it's time for another 5 gln can. Yeh that's what I'm thinking right now.
That shelf area at 4:00 mins I've hit it just below to the south the other day going west. It dropped me back onto the big whoops trail that follows Pierce wash on the south side back to the Fort.

If you have time to stash 10 - 15 gallons in that area, that's plenty. I'll bring some 2 smoker oil for those who may need a mix. That's easy. There is a lot of area out there, so let's just know where the gas is, and get lost otherwise.

Perfect, You read my mind. I'll get a third can and I plan on heading out tues. or wed. to stash the three 5gln cans. Should work for us.
I'll get a gps reading and write it down.:lol8: x marks the spot and all that kinda of shit.
Oh and 9:00am at the Ihop worked well last time for us.
So if that's cool with all then 9:ooam at the Ihop Friday the 20th. That'd be 8:00 for all you boys down under:)
Ihop is on 3050 east down south a block or two from the Green Springs St. George exit. It is on the east side of the road.
If anybody needs more info then holler and we'll get you dialed in.

Cool -Sounds good and I'll just play it by ear for now.
Oh and thanks for the help getting me close on the suspension. Got out yesterday and took the front to 16 out and keep the rebound at were you told me for now. Went to ten out on the rear and have not touched the high speed setting at all.
I think I'll try to get out again today and may tighten up the rear just a tad more and see how see feels.
She's still a little loose in the sandy washes at speed but I think it's just me getting use to the lighter bike.
When you rode the nelson hills and tightened up your rebound, Is this the rebound number you gave me or did you set it back after ridding the sand?

I was riding on my stock springs, but I was running 10 clicks out, then 12 clicks out at Nelson Hills. Being that you're in sandy conditions alot, you're going to have to deal with the stiffness. Unfortunately, there's no magic setting for both.
I just stiffen both top and bottom of forks 2 clicks when I hit sandy areas. The front tire plays a huge role too. Stiff sidewall, less pressure and Vice Versa.:facepalm1:

Yeh I was thinking something of the same. Least that way I can get an idea of how that climb up Navaho trail is. I'm sure it's not that bad.
I think the gas stash will have to be up there anyway. Trees and rocks, The bottom land is very barren over by the Mt. Trumble school and there is a few scattered farmers. (kids with atv's).
It would really suck to get out there and think we're ok on the gas thing only to find out different.
Besides then you'll be to far in and have to ride it.:)

I did get a bit of a scar today. Got in over my head as I so often do.
Hit a single track close to home while trying to put the finishing touches on the suspension and had to make a climb up a trail with a cliff on one side and no hope of getting back onto the trail on the other side. Forgot it had a 2' ledge while coming down it. Went to go back up later and did a wheel stand at the same time took out a scrub bush with my right foot.
So here I am holding on for dear life with one foot off, In a wheelie with just inches to spare and another 50 yrds to go.
How I did not gover the cliff is anybody's guess but needless to say I milked it for the next 6-7 miles.:scared::scared::scared::lol8:
It was one of those kind of trails that if you stalled, There was not enough trail to stand on the side of your bike and back it down and no room at all to turn around.
Ahh the lessons that need be learned might just kill me.
It was one of those hair pin turns at the bottom that only can be handled in first gear then climb baby climb.
But like they say in Golf- I'd rather be lucky than good.:)

I'll post up tomorrow the GPS and maps for the elephant butte loop. I still think you guys should go to Coral Pink. It's really good riding, think logandale with more slickrock and better, high speed, winding trails.

Temple Trail Sign= N36*44.748' W113*17.992'
I ran into issues with closed gates north of here. The gates look like you can just open them but in the middle they are wired tight. Like 20 wraps in a figure 8 the twisted for good messure.
No big deal we'll just use the Colorado City cut off trail from the River Road route. May want to move the stagging area to here as well.
Gas will be close on this one and I have stashed it and will give cords by PM. We will be cutting it close. The CR500 may need some extra help to get to stash.
The bottom roads are wide and fast but the roads up on the Hurricane Cliffs are a moto xers dream. no rocks and all dirt baby. Fast with turns and just enough rutts to keep you on your toes.
Very sceenic on top in the sagebrush country up high. And yes Acca there is some snow around LOL.
Mt. Trumble School House is on the way and the roads down low are very dusty so remember to bring filters for the next days ride.

01-16-2012, 08:07 PM
The next sign say's St. Goerge that a way but if your on a dirt bike your screwed:lol8:
I think you'll all like the high country part of this ride. It is fast enough with a lot of turns and the dirt is unbelievable. Real dirt not sand with little to no rocks.Sagebrush country.
Your tires will love it.
There is two ways to do this loop but I think that doing it in reverse as to how I did it today would be better.
Do the good ride, gas up and then hit the school and back north again to the parking area.
Let me know if your bringing the box trailer. If so may I leave my yz in it for the first part? If I ride my Honda and fill it to the brim. This may be just the ticket to get us all to the gas dump.
It's a big ride with wonderful country but nothing real tech. Most of it will be 50-60 with some areas were you can really stretch your legs.
I'm thinking the better 1/2 of a day with time to get into some single track after lunch.
So bring lots of gas.:)
It would be best to park at the base. Trail 1009 or the start to Black rock pectro site off of the new highway and River rd. Out by the new Airport. It's one and the same.
WE can still hit the Warner by way of Fort Pierce wash and it's humungus whoops trail along the river. Takes about 15 miles is all and your in warner again. OR ten minutes.
I'm tellin ya that you may just want to get the gas and go back over this sweet dirt area again to return. And forget the hole stopping at the school thing. It's that nice................
Mtnseeker1
01-16-2012, 09:40 PM
If we go in as I came out it is +- 78 1/4 miles. not much room for mistakes. EH what the heck, I'll just carry an extra 1/2 gln in my pack and not make routing mistakes:haha:
I really want to ride the YZ anyway.
However if I take the XR super tanker we know I can get 4-5 guys a 1/2 gln with no worries unless we don't have a small jugg.
This will be a true test of skill. Between running out of gas and roosting it baby.
By the way the 78 1/4 ish is in a new parking area. N36*59' 56.33" W113*33' 37.12" Basically 3 mile south of the St.George MX track.

Okay boys, here’s the info.
The loop is called the Elephant Butte loop and is about 40 miles. It runs from a parking area off the yellow jacket road up into the East Fork of the Virgin, barracks area, and out to the 89 highway just south of Mt. Caramel. It then runs back through the hills to the parking area. It’s a superb route and one you guys will love. It has tremendous vistas, it’s like riding a dirt bike through Zion. There are some river crossings and this is one of the reasons we typically ride it this time of year since the water will be low. The first crossing you come to will be the worst since the river narrows down. It will look bad but it’s only knee deep or so. I went through slow and didn’t get too much splash and managed to stay pretty dry. The other crossings (4-5 total) are in wider areas where it’s nothing more than peg deep at worst. There used to be a log that you could jump off of to avoid the first crossing (actually jump the river) but the last time I was there it was gone, but it looked like people where still using the dirt launch pad to clear most of the water, but since I had the benefit of watching a 4 wheeler go through right before me I knew how deep it was. If you look at my TR for that trip you can see the first crossing and the 4wheeler coming out of the mud. Note, that their pants are still dry.
If you look at the map it’ll look confusing but really it’s straight forward and by far the most traveled route out there. We typically do the loop and then come back to the truck and rest and head out on other trips. You can stay left on the way out on the second loop and actually end up right at the head of Rock Canyon (a popular canyoneering spot). Also across the road from the parking spot is another trail that is fun to follow and will head along the road and eventually head east to a huge pour over than you can get off and walk 100-200 yards on slickrock to check out. The only area I would avoid is the actual dune area and ranger station since once you get towards there you’re supposed to have a flag (even though there are some GREAT winding sand roller coaster loops there)
I couldn’t find my garmin tracks but I retraced the route in google earth (KMZ) file. I can convert it at home to a Garmin file if you guys need that. I’ll PM or email the KMZ file so you guys can review if you want. There are tone of areas to explore out there. Even if you decide not to cross the river (probably ‘cause Mtn Seeker is scared….) (or it’s snowing, like it was the last time I was there) you can just turn around and still end up with a spectacular trip and views.

I typically go out there through Colorado City via hurricane. After going through colorado city watch for a big dirt road on the left called CANE BEDS road. It'll take you via dirt back to Utah and the paved Yellow Jacket road. Follow the paved road for 3.7 miles to the parking area.

On a side note. I was talking to my neighbor about the Fri. ride. I told him that the Honda is all prepped and ready to roll if he was interested.
I did mention prior to this that the gas stash was way the heck out there. The first thing he said was, So I'm packing gas for everybody:haha:
I ensured him that yes in deed he was and if it was an issue that he could take my YZ and I would be more than happy to ride the BRP.
He acted like this was some kind of trap. It is. If I can get him out for a ride I will. He just sold his cr250 2-t and has only rode once since then. He hated the BRP in the sand and asked me how the H** I did it?
I told him it's just a matter of wanting to ride bad enough.
I think he is still on the fence about this ride. WTF
If somebody gave me the ride with gas I'd be all over it and bike is prepped and ready to roll, I'd be all over it. Did I mention the fact that I'd be all over it?
I'd be very careful but still I'd be all over it.
I did tell him that after we get back from the long ride that I was going to be riding the YZ and he could just stay at the truck and gaurd the ice chest.:lol8:
By the way I do have a set of jumper cables and may need to use them Fri. eve.

I found the yellow jacket rd. Good news
Bad news is I found it on a 1997 topo. so how knows just what roads have be closed since then.
Good news is I have been dropped of in the middle of no were many times under darkness ( thanks uncle sam)
Bad news it has been more than 25 yrs. since I had to use a compass to intersect and resect.:lol8:
Good news is I still own a compass.
Bad news is this is doable but does take time and I need to be in location, Maybe.
In order to intersect and resect.
Good news is there only seems to be a limited amount of hill tops.
Bad news is when using Google earth my parking area is way off of what I thought originally.
Good news is I do own a gps, A really nice little Garmin gpsmap60csx.
Ok you can see were this is going and the gps is of no help to my Romper Room Drop Out education:lol8:
If I can figure out a way to do a basic overlay somehow this will be easier.
The info that nelson gave us works on the topo but I will need to pinpoint some features before I can convert anything over to usable digital data.
I'm not sure if I can convert messurements enough to do a POI on Google Earth.
The scale is 1:100,000 with contours at 50 meters.anything 1/2 mile south of the dunes is off my topo. By State park bounderies as of 1997.
