A little while back, some guy made a splash on the internets by sending an HD video camera and an iPhone into space using a weather balloon. The camera was for taking awesome home video. The phone (with its GPS) was for finding the homemade spacecraft after it fell back to earth.
The result of this project were pretty amazing, but afterwards everybody and their brother starting doing the same thing and posting the video on YouTube. So, like all YouTube sensations, the whole thing became kind of boring.
Then a couple of awesome dudes named Danny and Rich had an idea—let’s send a beer into space—and all of a sudden, the “sending stuff into space” meme got cool again.

Their beer of choice? Natty Light, naturally. (I’d like to send Natty Light into space, too, but probably not for the same reasons as these gentlemen.)
They put one full can of Natty in a styrofoam cooler with a camera and some hand-warmers (to prevent space freeze). Then they fixed an empty Natty can on the outside of the cooler, right in the camera’s view, for stunning visual effect. With their space craft complete, they attached it to a standard weather balloon and let it go.
Obviously it worked, or you wouldn’t be reading about it. But the best part is that the beer inside the cooler survived the journey, then got drunk by Danny and Rich.

They claim it was the first beer in space. I say maybe, maybe not. Either way, space beer is pretty awesome.
