Reno, Nev (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- This is the story of a good samaritan, who helped rescue two people -- and he did it with a garden hose!

When clothing store manager Frank Osborn finishes work, he's hoping his drive home up Mount Rose Highway is nothing like last Thursday night's.

"It seemed like they lost control, and then they headed to the side of the road, and went off it," said Osborn.

But when a car -- with a woman and a two year old boy inside -- spins off the highway in icy conditions and down a cliff, it's a guy like Osborn you want to be there.

"I did what was natural and pulled over to make sure they were okay," he said.

Osborn is a canyoneer who's taken canyoneering classes in Utah and carries rope in his car. The Problem was, when he went to grab the rope (so he could tie it to a post and descend down the hill) it wasn't in his car. So he grabbed the next best thing -- a 100 foot garden hose, which he had bought to clean his deck.

Osborn ripped the hose out of its packaging, tied it to the road post, descended down it, and first brought the boy back to safety (and to the warm car).

"He was yelling and screming, in shock, it was very cold, he was shaking, it was 20 degrees," said Osborn.

Osborn went back to assist the mother in climbing up the garden hose, as they warmed up and waited for NHP.

"I couldn't believe no one was really hurt," he said.

As for that garden hose knot which he tied to the post, it's called the Clove Hitch knot, he says. And those skills he learned as a canyoneer, might never come in more handy.

(The woman who was rescued doesn't speak english and lives out of the area, but osborn says she was very thankful... As for the hose, he never got around to cleaning his deck, but he says maybe he'll get around to cleaning it next year.)

I hope this thread devolves into an argument about whether or not to use natural anchors while rescuing immigrants with a garden hose. :haha:

Who in the world put that stupid post there where there were plenty of natural anchors in the area. Idiots...... Where is this located. I'm taking my post removal kit and I'm going to get rid of that eye-sore. Noobs. Get some skills!

How's that Don? :lol8:

Using a clove hitch as an anchor knot on a mainline for rescue? No back up belay line (hose)?. I'm sure none of them were wearing helmets either. And don't get me started on the abundance of man made anchors...:haha:

Friggin rookies! Everyone knows hoses carry a lot of water through them, so you use a water knot. but this guy uses a clove hitch?

ppl... it wasent a cliff and I didn't even use the hose... it was s steep slope. the hose was there as a handline IF needed.
highway patrol took over an hour to arrive. nobody would have known they where down there. I did what I thought was best and used what I had. it was 20 degrees out and about a 20 foot visual range. :ne_nau:

Hose or no hose, still a great effort.:2thumbs:

What you did, Frank, was fabulous. You stopped. That is huge in this world of "I don't want to get involved or take responsibility." Well done and kudos. :2thumbs: You are too modest, man.

But throw us canyoneers a bone. Let's re-write some history folks. I'll start. Ya'll add on to the story.

"The unassuming Frank n' Beans was driving up a dark and desolate canyone one evening when......"

Without Frank's hose, those people might have been hosed. Good going Frank! Peace, Kelley
