Stevens Arch

These are from a day hike from the Crack-in-the-Wall TH up to Stevens Arch and back. Total time was 8 hrs RT, with about 1.5 hrs at the arch eating lunch and admiring the view, and another 0.5 sitting at the crack and likewise admiring. A really great day!

The route is easy, no special notes. From the crack, keep left on the sand slide and drop into Coyote Gulch. About 5-10 mins downstream to the confluence. From the confluence up river about 400-500 yards, to basically the end of a stretch of thicket. Poke behind the thicket and start up a slide.

Continue up the slide until level with the arch's base. From there it's a simple walk across the bench to the arch about 1/2 mile. Great views of course, and really quite something that the arch looks almost unapproachable from below but is really so easy.

Sweet pics. Went through coyote gulch last year. I had some guys with me who weren't up for going on the sketchy part to drop down to the escalante. Going to take my varsity scouts next year.

I've tried to get to Steven's Arch twice now with no success! Great pics, love the pano's!

1st time we had someone not bring enough water in August and had to turn back, second time was early may and a snow storm rolled in when we got to the crack, we decided not to chance it and turned back. It's still on my list of places to go but climbing back up that sand hill is a bear!

is it difficult to make that th ? high clearance 4wd or standard passenger ? i'd love to backpack up stevens canyon and loop back down via fold some year.

HRR road is graded periodically and decent for a passenger car most of the time. Check with the interagency center in Escalante or here on Bogley for conditions. The problem with the center is they're much too conservative in assessment. The last 2 or 3 miles from 40 mile tank to the TH are sandy and a passenger car could get stuck for lack of clearance. 2wd is sufficient, though.

Awesome photos! That arch is certainly one of the most impressive around. I'd love to see a distant view from the other side...that's very, very remote country. We did the Crack-in-the-Wall route several years ago, when that damn reservoir was very low.
