View Full Version : Hogs difficulty, Hog 3 especially

I've read enough descriptions and trip reports to have a good idea about what to expect in Boss Hog. Hog 2 and Miss Piggy (Hog 4) seem to be of comparable difficulty?

Hog 3 aka Razorback gets a more serious rating. I am curious why. What are the difficulties? Exactly how hard is it?

Any info or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It has been a few years since I have done it, but there are a number of difficult downclimbs with some exposure (20 ft?). Otherwise it is straightforward. I would say it is more serious that Hog 1 and 2. It is certainly not an extreme canyon, but you should be comfortable with drops like that

Canyoneering does not have an exact rating system like climbing.

"Harder" canyons tend to be a mix of harder moves over bigger drops, not rappellable, spottable or protectable. So Hog 1, Hog 2 and Miss Piggy have stuff that is higher than Middle Leprechaun, but not very hard - all the moves are pretty easy. Hog 3 has moves that are harder, more physical, and off the ground. It is a step up from the others, about the same step up from Hog 1 and Hog 2 as they are from Leprechaun.

And the rock is really rough, so it hurts, too, or as Mr. Brejcha says so eloquently: "there are ass jabbing nubs on the downs climbs".

Thanks for the beta guys. I enjoyed all 4 Hogs this weekend :). Love the Razorback name for Hog 3; very fitting.

how was the road to the top?

how was the road to the top?

High clearance needed but not 4WD. There were some deep channels/washouts running along the road in a couple places but they were easy enough to avoid. Nothing terrible. Most trucks and suvs would be fine.

I just realized you are the same Sarah I met in North Wash a few Novembers ago. We did Shenanigans together (i was the ugly one named Dan). Looks like your 13ers project is going pretty well.

Dan - Hi! Being such a big shot canyoneer I figured you wouldn't remember me. Took me a while to figure out CarpeyBiggs was you but I recently put 2 and 2 together. Ugly one named Dan... ha!, not exactly the word I would have used. As for my 13er project, I completed it in late September and rewarded myself by spending every weekend of October canyoneering in Utah . With those pesky peaks out of the way I have more time for REAL fun!

jman - Sorry, I don't have a lot of details regarding the anchor failure because I was down below already. Apparently the deadman anchor was borderline to start. I rapped successfully (with an unweighted meat back up). Several others followed. Then when one guy was just about to start rapping someone noticed the anchor moving around. They beefed it up.

Hi Sarah. Nice shots. You need to get someone else to be the expedition photographer more frequently so we can see more of you in the photos! Do you use a particular photo gallery program? Can you tell us what it is?
Congrats again on finishing the 13ers. Tell your gang hello for us. They all make for a strong & efficient group. I see you're learning why we never did let peakbagging dominate our entire agenda. Too much fun to be had doing other things like these canyons. Maybe we'll see ya out there some time.

Excellent pics, Scanning thru them I saw my friend Jean and called her up to get more details. I'm jealous, wish I had the time off to make it over to Utah as often as you guys.
Congrats on 13r's also. :2thumbs: How long did it take? Jean told me it took her something like 13-14 yrs?

I think she did it in about six years - new record beating out Teresa Gergen.

Jeesh, small world.

peakbaggers - Hi! Good to hear from ya! Hope you two are doing well. Perhaps we could team up for some canyons next spring... if I can get my act together and manage to plan a trip more than 3 or 4 days in advance!

To make the slideshows I used a program called Jalbum. It used to be free but they now charge a small fee. I'm still using the old free version but will have to upgrade soon.

flatiron - Funny that you recognized the Jeanster... she seems to be quite the popular lady lately!

Thanks for the 13er congrats. They took me about 8 years to complete I think; I developed other interests near the end and got distracted. Teresa still holds the speed record at about 6 years I think. I am currently the youngest finisher (although that won't last too long).

Hi Sarah,
Seen you on Summit Post & Lists of John as well. Had to read your thoughts about Peak L & the rest up above Slate Lake.
Canyons in the spring? Yes - we'd like to meet up but have the same problem as you - too spontaneous in our planning. Nevertheless, keep us in mind. We like those Zion peaks too. Thanks for the album info.
Below, I have posted the interview Ken Nolan did with Teresa G. on 14erWorld, in case you haven't seen it. Gives pretty exact timing on how long it took her. We thought it took her 10 years - guess we were wrong. Tough to keep up with someone like tha anyhow. They never stop to rest!

"This is a hard calculation to make. When a person intends to attempt a speed record, such as those who have set 14er speed records, that person has probably climbed some or all of the 14ers before. They announce a start time and we watch to see how long it takes them to finish. We don't count from the first time they ever climbed a 14er; we count the shortest amount of time that elapses during which they climb everything on the list. My first 14er was Quandary in 1999, but I happened to climb one 13er, Audubon, in 1996. However, I have since repeated Audubon, and, for that matter, almost all of the 14ers I climbed during my first 14er season. The first ranked peak over 13,000 ft that I climbed and that I have not repeated is Sheridan, which I climbed on 6/20/99. So, I can claim that I climbed all the 637 ranked peaks over 13,000 ft between 6/20/99 and 9/11/05, or slightly less than 6 years, 3 months."
