Estimates put Qaddafi as the richest person in the world at the time of his death. Worth over 200 billion. :eek2:

Yes it is sad. It's good to see that at least something might be done.

Unfortuantely, these are just the kinds of regimes the USA often supports. This was especially true during the Regan Administration, but which tapered off somewhat during the Bush Sr. and Clinton years only to be revived with a vengence during the Bush Jr. years. If only most Americans weren't so ignorant in history, maybe something would be done.

Some of the other really corrupt regimes supported by the US:

Daniel Arap Moi (Kenya) [especially by the Regan Administration, but continuing through 2002].

Mohammad Pahlavi (Iran) [installed by force by the CIA during the Truman administration, which had disasterous consequences later in 1979 and continuing today (when a far worse regime took over); before then the Middle East was much more pro-US].

Saddam Hussein (Iraq) [especially during the Regan administation, continuing until 1990]

Osama Bin Laden/Mujahideen (Afganistan) [especially during the Regan administration, but also in the Bush Sr. administations].

Contras (Nicaragua) [especially during the Regan administration]

The list could go on and on, these are only a few examples.

Even in Equatorial Guinea (which is the country mentioned in the article), Bush Jr. (under the pressure of US oil companies-especially Exxon Mobile) was the one that revived support for the corrupt regime (in which most ties were cut of in 1994) in 2006.

We want good foreign relations, but IMHO, supporting the most corrupt regimes isn't the way to do it. Neither is arming such regimes because they are the enemy of our enemy. Most of the world is a friendly place full of good people, many of which could use our help. Corrupt regimes aren't the ones needing it.
