So I bought one and I hate it.:fitz: A piece of webbing should not stand straight out when held horizontally. I have an alternative that I much prefer, but I wondering what alternatives other people use and if anyone else is put off by how firm and unweilding it is.

P.s. Mine is brand new and if someone wants it I will part with it for a reasonable price. PM me if interested.

I also do not care for the spelegyca. The longer arm on it is way too short for me when trying to ascend. I prefer to tie my own caving tethers out of 9mm dynamic rope. For canyoneering, where I usually do not expect to ascend, my upper ascender is attached by some of that really skinny titan cord. My clip-in tether is a dyneema sling about 18 inches long.

do you need just a safety tether? imlay clipster works well for that...

A Purcell Prusik System (3 pieces). A long foot system, short foot system and a 60cm loop (hard point connection for ascencion). I use the short foot system as my PAS. I used to use BW 6MM Accessory cord (7kn) but now use N.E. 6MM Accessory cord because it is more flexible. I also deviate slightly and use a wrap3, wrap2 for the stirrup on each foot system. Total used around 9M at a cost of $1.05M, so for around $10 I have a very versatile set that can be used for many applications.

And on top of what Bo is saying, break tests were performed on different tethers, the purcell came out with the highest breaking strength of all other tethers tested. I believe the tests were up to a fall factor 3.

having said that--I use a spelegyca, works well for me.

Got a citation on that?

ahh-don't make me go look, yes, I had the actual test data at one time.

found it

http://www.riggingforrescue.com/files/Download/Rigging%20for%20Rescue%20-%20Lanyards%20Part%20II%20-%202006.pdf

lots of factors come into play, I haven't the time right now to re-review the testing.

Not quite the right file, but related.

I reach a different conclusion than the author. From the data, I think it shows that climbing or canyoneering with 100 kg of steel weights attached to your harness is a bad idea.

Do you have a picture of your system? On our local SAR rescue litter, we have purcells for tie-ins and I like the system.
I bought a cool little device from KONG called the slyde, I need to find some suitable cord to set it up with but I'm anxious to try it.

P.S. any takers on my brand new spelegyca? $20. Maybe a thread in which were are discussing it's alleged inferiority is not really the best place to advertise it...:haha:

...I wondering what alternatives other people use ...

I prefer to use a 5' piece of Omni-sling (http://www.northwashoutfitters.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=63) . I put a carabiner on each end and a carabiner about 5-6 loops from one end and clip this into my belay loop on my harness. This gives me a long tail and a shorter tail with clip in loops all the way along each side. The shorter tail is perfectly lengthed for my ascending rig and the long tail is perfect for hanging my pack (bunny strap) and safety tethering into an anchor. The webbing also has a 5,000 lb breaking strength.

A Spelegyca is GREAT! Very useful for those trained in rescue techniques. Especially useful in Class C Canyons. $ 20.00 is a good deal.

Here is my setup. Nearly the same dimensions as the petzl but much more manageable and just as strong. Made from a 120cm petzl dyneema runner tied with a turks head and clove hitches at each biner. To keep it compact I then run a loose stitch from the knot to the clove hitch on each end. The thread just keeps the strands of webbing together and hold no weight. The bar-tacked section of he runner is at the base and I sleeved it in a piece of 9/16 inch webbing.

Well I don't think that this will solve the problems people have with the Spelegyca, but it looks like Petzl will be releasing a dynamic rope based lanyard system early next year...
I can't post the link to the press release but its called the Petzl Progression.

Personnally I have always preferred the Purcell Prusik, but to each their own.

Anyone know of someone who makes a dynamic tether with sewn eyes out of 9mm cord? I've used a Petzl jane in SAR and ski lift evac setups but i'm pretty sure its 11mm. Can anyone confrim this?

Why???

Tom

For my Kong Slide:nod: I actually found that Singing Rock will make custom length and diameter lanyards with either one or two sewn ends. Booyah:headbang: That may also bee good news for members of the caver crowd who want custom length cowtails with no bulky knots.

I'm not sure what diameter it is, but beal makes a dynamic tether with sewn eyes on each end call the dynaclip.
