Throat Cancer - WTF?

A study published in yesterday's Journal of Clinical Oncology (http://jco.ascopubs.org/content/early/2011/10/03/JCO.2011.36.4596.abstract) reveals that as many as 72 percent of throat tumors in men may be linked to the human papillomavirus, commonly known as HPV. Yep...scary stuff, huh? So much for the HPV being presumed to be harmless in men! Also a compelling reason for teens of both sexes vaccinated with Guardasil. I hope they can develop a screening test for men, maybe similar to a Pap smear, to check men for this. The idea of men dying from throat cancer because of this stupid virus is horrific.

Another fact, re HPV. You are considered "high-risk" for contracting it (and I'll apply that to men as well, although it was originally pertaining to risk for women developing cervical cancer) if you've had 2 sexual partners or more in your life :eek2:. Granted, if you've been monogamous for decades, it's probably not an issue, but it is scary stuff when an infection spreads without overt symptoms, and you have no way of knowing if you or your partner has been exposed. Women don't know until their Pap smear turns up with dysplasia which is or can be a precursor for cancer (BT,DT...it sucked on many levels).
