WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Park Service says engineers scheduled to begin rappelling down the Washington Monument may have to wait because of a threat of thunderstorms.

The team was to begin Tuesday inspecting the outside of the monument for damage sustained during an earthquake that shook the East Coast last month. One engineer emerged from a hatch near the top of the 555-foot structure and spent about three hours setting up ropes and other equipment.

The exterior inspection is expected to last about five days. The engineers will check for cracks and chips in the marble, missing mortar and other damage.
After their work is completed, the private engineering firm will craft a plan to repair the monument.

It's been closed to visitors since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23.
