Date: Saturday October 1, 2011
Length: 50 miles (43 short cut option).
Climbing: substantial
Descending: More substantial
85% singletrack.

It is highly encouraged that those wanting to participate come ready to camp Friday night at what will be the finishing point of the ride. We are anticipating a 7:00am start Saturday morning. It'll be perhaps a little dark, but the first couple of miles are an easy cruise on a flat jeep road. By the time the fun begins, there'll be plenty of daylight.

More logistics: We are planning on dropping a cache of food and beverages (bring your own stuff) at roughly the 30 mile mark at Tony Grove Lake. I for one am going to buy a cheap styrofoam cooler that I can throw away when we are done with it so I don't have to go retrieve anything. We are also planning on having a BBQ/party thing (we will have a grill, but bring your own food) at the end of the ride. There is a stream nearby where we can soak tired legs and just BS for a while whilst the food is cooking.

Disclaimer: This is not a "no drop" ride. I for one am just going for completion, while some are going to race it and try to set the inaugural best time. Inevitably the group will split up into many smaller groups that cater to different abilities. Please be prepared with everything you will need to be self-sufficient. I can provide GPS files and some TOPO files for those that are interested. This should be a spectacular route, but it will be difficult and there are likely 2-3 sections where many will be forced to walk briefly.

Course: The elevation profile and route picture are posted below this (route starts on the north and travels south). You will notice that there is one shortcut option (blue line) to cut off a chunk of mileage as well as a significant climb. However, this shortcut option also cuts off arguably the best descent of the ride.....I have attached a google earth file for those inclined to open it. There are also multiple bail-out options where a wiped out rider can get to Logan Canyon Highway and just coast downhill to the BBQ site. There will be no course marking. It is highly recommended that you bring a GPS, ride fast enough (or slow enough) to stick with somebody who does, or have the ability to read a map and not get lost.

Attendance: For those that are interested in joining us. Let me know. That way I can know if I need to reserve some campsites for some late arrivals, etc, etc. I will hit up the local bike shops and see if I can come up with some SWAG for random people as well as the faster rider.

Wow, looks like an epic. Is it just a 1 night camp?

The riding will actually be done in one day. I am just suggesting that out-of-towners camp the night before the ride to avoid excessive early morning travelling on the day of the ride.

This ride is going to have a very poor Bogley showing.......

Do you plan to do this again next year? About the same time? I might be interested if given a little more notice.

Yep. Sort of an annual tradition. Next year we are planning on doing a 2-stage ride (basecamp will be setup before hand so you're not actually riding with your sleeping gear) that is about 100 miles........

Hmmm 100 miles! I Guess I have a goal to work towards. I will keep it in mind for next year.

So did anyone do this ride? If so, how was it?

A couple of mechanicals, lots more on and off over downed trees than expected, accumulated effects of "a little bit" of hike-a-bike, all added up to a much longer day than expected. I'm already plotting my revenge on this route though. Some day it will be mine! I should probably eat more next time though.......

Lovely morning for an adventure

First mechanical. Just a "little" brake adjustment.

I warned people this would be an adventure.

Fixing Chain #1 on Shorty's Cutoff

Major surgery on chain #2 at the same spot on Shorty's. Skidz'ssss derailleur hanger broke off, relegating him to walking/coasting after a failed single speed conversion.

Some of the group bailed down Steam Mill. Typical rock garden descent.

After this point we lost our cameraman, so no more pictures.

:2thumbs: Nice pics. I have only ridden up that way once on Stump Hollow. How long did it take you guys to ride the trail?
