I know that there are quite a few softwares out there that will rip a commercial DVD onto your hardrive and then convert it into a format that will play through iTunes. Can anybody give a recommendation with software they have had luck with?

I use my video coverter. It's awesome and will convert any video file with custom settings to another. It won't rip video from a DVD. You'll need something else for that.

I'm a little slow, but I can't quite make out exactly the name of the software you are referring to. It sounds like it will work great for me for part II of my devious plan though.

Does this break the encryption on the original disc?

a decent software that I have been using to convert files is called "any video converter" There are a couple more that I also use but this one is quite universal. The only thing that I haven't gotten it to do right so far is converting .mkv files. Which you shouldn't need. I would give it a try.

I hope this helps
