For the second time in about 5 weeks we've found a deer carcass in the exact same spot in the back corner of my property. Both times the carcass was ripped open. My neighbor was convinced it was a lion the first time, but I wasn't sure. Maybe it just died and coyotes scavenged it? Now that it's happened again it seems pretty clear. We contacted a researcher who was interested in tagging the lion with a transmitter if the kill was fresh enough to attract it to come back, but it was too decomposed. She did mount a camera to try to observe it hunting again. I haven't had a chance to check that out as I was away from home all day yesterday when this happened.
I'm pretty stoked actually to have a lion coming near frequently! I have no small children or outside pets to worry about. My home is in the Santa Cruz mountain about 7 miles north of Santa Cruz CA. If only I could get a chance to see it...

I encountered a mountain lion in my bathroom at the Zion Canyon B&B over the weekend. It was stuffed. :fitz:

I saw a cougar riding a jaguar in the parking lot at work, but that's as close to *seeing* a Felis concolor as I've gotten yet.
Cool to have it around but I'd be careful! My neighbor had tracks leading to his garage, never saw the cat but a friend of his brought in dogs and there had been one in the area.

I'd be wary! A young man and his dad came into the store last week. The boy just got out of a month in the hospital in SLC after being attacked by 2 Lions! He was missing his left arm and his right calf was missing, other than that he only had several hundred stitches on his lower extremities!!!!! YIKES........I'm pretty certain that the Lions were african lions and that jumping up on a wall in a zoo in central america were the prime stimulus for the attack??????? Soooooooooo.....don't be jumping up on walls and you should be safe?!
