We got a bit of a late start on Spry. The day before we did Boundry Canyon, exiting the Narrows. Frankly, I was surprised my knees worked (well enough after 600 mg of Motrin, anyway). We printed the express permit, loaded our gear, and figured we would hitch a ride from the bottom, the first hairpin turn headed up Highway 9 to the tunnel. What we hadn

The canyon is lavishly bolted and all the anchors were in great condition.

Great TR. "Lavishly bolted". I like that. Ha ha.

What's up with the long blue sling to the two bolt anchor? Is that a part of that anchor?

Fun stuff.

The long blue sling is tied off to the tree (former anchor), providing a safety line for rigging up and getting to the two-bolt anchor.

A couple of those rappels are easier / more fun as downclimbs, Ken. (No moral implications intended).

Except that downclimbing makes fewer rope grooves (3rd picture) than rappelling.

Nice TR. Spry is one of my favorites. Some fun raps and some fun downclimbs. Mix in the water and it makes an awesome day!

Please post a CANDITION, Ken, if you have not already done so.

Funny that you should say that because in picture 6, we set it up as a rappel but it is really a chimney, so point taken.

I will put those two canyons into Canditions.com

Thanks

Ken

Picture 3 is a really fun downclimb, too. Picture 6, a fun downclimb, actually easier than the awkward rappel it is, if rappelled.

I have always thought about downclimbing this but thought it widened up too much about halfway down. Next time I go through defintiely giving it a shot.

Picture 6, right?

Yup, rappelled it once or twice. Rappelled elsewhere there too, that REALLY sucked. Much easier than it looks. Good holds at the top, good dimensions at the bottom. It all works out and even when wet, many people can keep their feet dry.

Correct. I have always just rappelled at Picture 3. Heard it could be downclimbed but the rap was quick and easy for us everytime.
Yea picture number 6, one time my feet were wet from the previous drop, and consequently slipped on the tricky rappel and nearly drove part of the log jam through my leg. Fun times.
