On a recent backpacking trip to the Uintas, I tried a couple of these for the first time. Scrambled Eggs and Bacon, and Spaghetti with Meat Sauce.

They were decent, probably as good as freeze dried food gets.

Anybody have favorite Mountain House meals?

The eggs and bacon tasted decent. One thing I did not like was the instruction to drain excess water after it had been cooked. I just left it in there until I was finished, straining the excess with the fork. I assume this is because of the unpredictability of how much moisture would be absorbed in different batches of eggs

I was satisfied with the Spaghetti. Would purchase again. :cool2:

My favorite is the blueberry granola and the chili mac. The chili mac is best when you add some Fritos and some hot sauce to it.

I have been getting into freezer bag cooking, where you prepare meals yourself and put them in freezer bags and add water as you would for the MH. This is cheaper and doesn't have so much freaking sodium.

Sweet & Sour Pork by Mtn House. Fine dining in the BC.

Most of them are decent. Just say no to the Jamaican style one. Blech! I like the sweet and sour pork. I also like the granola/blueberries but that particular one seems grossly over priced.

Speaking of price, it seems they've come down quite a bit from the first time I saw them. I think these were right around $5, which isn't bad. Sure you compare price of meals and such, but you add in the lightweight factor and the ability to eat out of the bag and easily dispose, it's pretty decent.

I think the lasagna is much better than the spaghetti. I also like the Chicken and potatoes, and the blueberries and granola. The blueberries and granola is really nice on the morning of the day you hike out. No need to get the stove out and heat up water and then put everything away!

We've did the MH wraps too and they are good. Packing in tortillas are kind of heavy as well as the sharp cheddar we added to them.

I do the freezer bag cooking as well. I do like the Spaghetti and meatballs. The rice with chicken is as bland as it gets. Hot sauce doesn't even make it taste good. I still have two packs left over from our varsity weeklong that no one wants...bleh.

I take the beef stroganoff all the time. It is pretty good and very filling, no gritty either. I tried a chicken fajita sample at Outdoor Retailer on Friday, it was pretty tasty. I think with some tortillas that one could be a up and coming meal on my next trip out there.

X2. That is my favorite. I had a spicy oriental something er'nother a few year back but I wouldn't recommend it. Man! talk about acid reflux... Not a pleasant night.

x3 on the beef stroganoff. Lasagna is about as good but that cheese is like concrete on your spoon.

Chicken and mashed potatoes is my favorite, followed by Chili Mac. I don't particularly like the Teriyaki Chicken.

I had the chili mac and beef stew this weekend. Both pretty decent, but there's a really slim selection here (like 5 dinner entrees and 2 breakfasts) at the Wally World, and these two sounded the best. Next time I'm up north I'll grab a few of the above recommendations (beef stroganoff sounds great) and give 'em a try.

A cheap DIY version of the granola and blueberries is to but your won granola and just add 2T of the Morning Moo's dehydrated milk. Then add blueberries or whatever berry you want. Just put it all in a bag then add water when you want to eat it.

Had the MH Eggs & Bacon for breakfast for the first time in mid-July on our Scout campout. It was pretty good, albeit a bit on the salty side. Also purchased the Chicken & Mashed Potatoes, Chili Mac, Beef Stew, and Beef Stroganoff dinners for our group to sample for dinner. No complaints about any of the meals tastes - all of the Scouts and Scouters enjoyed them! Lightweight meals, just add hot water, wait 10 minutes and a hearty meal is served. :2thumbs:

For dessert, we did the MH freeze dried Neopolitain ice cream and freeze dried ice cream sandwiches.

We always bring dehydrated ice cream with us. Usually a post fish cookout fire side treat. S'mores are usually on the list too.

Glockguy, thanks for voicing your opinion with regards to the sodium level in Mountain House meals. I think you'll be pleased to know that we have a new line of meals with less than 300mg of sodium. I'd like to send you a free sample of one of these new low sodium meals. If you're interested, send me a private message. Thanks!

Not too sure which eggs you took Chere? In the last year or so MH has come out with "Wraps". The Breakfast Skillet is one of my all time favorites. Combined with some soft flour tortillas one package of the breakfast skillet has fed up to 4 people for me. $6.39, the skillet has Hashbrowns, Scrambled Eggs, Pork Sausage, Peppers and Onions. The hashbrowns seem to absorb most of the water normally left over from the normal Scrambled eggs meal they make. They are very, very tasty and I think you might agree? You might try one on your next outing? I also like their Chicken Salad Wraps a lot! Chunks of creamy chicken with red onions, cranberries and pumpkin seeds. Served cold in a flour tortilla makes a yummy lunch and once again plan on feeding up to 3 with one packet at $6.39! Their BBQ Sauce and Beef wrap is awesome also for dinner if you like "pseudo sloppy joes" and once again plan on feeding at least 2 if not more on one pack for same price.

Erin ( my BFF) she had the eggs, I don't remember what flavor she had but we didn't like them so much. However I am always willing to try again. We are headed out for a camp trip the end of May and kids want to try them. We will stop in and get a few.

I was surprised the beef stew was better than expected.

Favorite is Pasta Primavera followed by the Stroganoff. Did not like any of the Eggs (tried plain and w/ peppers back in the day), And not a fan of the spaghetti, to me too much sauce, not enough sgetti. Those wraps do sound good so I will have to pick some up. Always on the look out for good selection of the single serving sizes.

I've tried out some meals by MH, in the last year, they are great and yummy, but never a dessert.

Is a dessert a really 'must have'?:ne_nau:

Comparable with ...?
Thanks.

I dunno about must have...but it's okay and satiates a cravy for sugar out in the field. However, I'm not a fan of freeze-dried desserts. Brownies seem to work the best for dessert in my experience when you're hiking. Even if they get squashed in the bottom of your backpack to a flat pancake, it's still good!

However, the MH entrees are great when backpacking, especially after a long day in the Grand Canyon - Beef Stroganoff with Noodles, Lasagna with Meat Sauce (my fav), Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, and Potatoes & Cheddar Broccoli! The Turkey Tetrazina made my stomach turn and turn..no fun...I'd skip that one.

I like the Spaghetti, Chili Mac, Lasagna, Chicken and Noodles, Mac and Cheese, and Pasta Primavera. Been meaning to try the seafood chowder.
But I'm going to stir the pot, so to speak, because I also really like a couple Backpacker's Pantry meals; Pad Thai Veggie (http://www.rei.com/product/711288/backpackers-pantry-pad-thai-veggie-2-servings), Chicken Vindaloo (http://www.rei.com/product/814468/backpackers-pantry-chicken-vindaloo-2-servings), and Katmandu Curry (http://www.rei.com/product/605328/backpackers-pantry-katmandu-curry-2-servings).
Any chance Mountain House is working on something a little more eastern?

I always eat dehydrated meals on backpack trips. Way better taste without the cost. However, I've gotten into the MH eggs with bacon lately because of the protein. You need to add a little cheese, pepper and hot sauce to it and they're fine. That with oatmeal for breakfast and you're good to go until at least noon. They're cheaper at Walmart.

I am in love with the Spaghetti, my fave used to be chili mac but I think they changed the recipe a year or two ago and now not so much. I do like the pasta primavera (but pick out all the pepper and squash). Now since I only eat half of a package I repack 1 package into 2-1 pint freezer bags, they don't melt when the boiling water is poured in and then I just wrap it up in my fleece or whatever; I do not bring a cozy or anything.

Good to see you listen and care about your customers Mountain House person!
