Sandy man survives fall down icy mountainside
August 4th, 2011 @ 6:15pm
By Sam Penrod

SANDY -- A Sandy man is recovering from a near fatal fall, down an icy mountainside in Little Cottonwood Canyon. He was with a group of scouts, when he lost his footing. A video of the fall shows just how lucky Hiram Thornton is.
Thornton was with a group of scouts at Maybird last week, when he got too close to a giant snow field and slid more than 300 feet into a boulder field.

It goes without saying, that of late.. its just not safe to head out with the scouts or be a scout (in Utah).

A Sandy man is a man from Sandy Utah.

Or, someone who's rolled around on the beach.

I've spent a fair amount of time in both that and very similar terrain. Steep, firm snow? Ice axe at the least (and knowledge in its application) and crampons/boots to match in most situations. But, with a group of kids? Horrible judgement. Just seems so casual about it when he steps and sorta slumps over onto that slope. Crazy.

I guess steep snow can look pretty benign. Heavy sigh.

Steep, late summer snow. Very slippery. It almost looked like he wanted to slide the way he kind of just sits there and makes no attempt to follow the kicked steps. That shows that he has little to no experience with snow slopes.

I know that wasn't super funny, but, that made me laugh so freaking hard and I don't know why. :roflol:
