Opponents of the Antiquities Act are attempting to weaken it by attaching anti-Act amendments/riders to the Department of the Interior's appropriation bill. Grand Staircase Escalante Partners members are encouraged to contact their Congressional Representatives and ask them to not support any anti-Antiquities Act amendments/riders. Please act now -- the anti-Antiquities Act amendments/riders may be offered this weekend!

Residents residing in Utah's 2nd District are encouraged to contact Representative Jim Matheson, as he was one of five Democrats who supported Representative Bishop's (Utah's 1st District) earlier attempt to weaken the Antiquities Act. (The St. George staff contact for Rep. Matheson is Mike Empey, 435-627-0880, mike.empey@mail.house.gov.)

Here are talking points when speaking with the public and elected officials:

Our public lands contain an amazing array of unique and irreplaceable natural, cultural, and historic national treasures which need to be protected from imminent threats.

A critical conservation tool, the Antiquities Act allows the president to protect and conserve public lands and waters that define our history and provide unique cultural, archeological, and scientific value.

The Antiquities Act has been used to designate national monuments in order to protect national treasures like the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon.

Spanning more than 100 years, fifteen presidents of both parties have used the Antiquities Act to protect publicly owned lands and waters for future generations.

The designation of national monuments can have positive impacts on job creation and economic growth in nearby communities.

Congress should not undermine the presidential authority provided by the Antiquities Act to protect our public lands.
