View Full Version : Canyon BOOTY

Took a group down Birch Hollow yesterday and found some pretty good canyon booty. Four nice oval screw gate carabiners. Whoever went down the day before us obviously didnt trust the steel quicklinks and so they added the screwgates to the anchors. They also cut out the anchor from the 2nd rappel, and tripled the webbing around the boulder with bright orange webbing. All in all, I got a pocket full of trash, 20 feet of orange webbing, a fat 3" diameter rapide, and four screwgates.

I always joke about never having to buy webbing, because with all the rookies, there is always too much in the canyons. Same with R/QL's. Wrong frame of mind?

Do you guys have a favorite canyon for booty?

So was this all found in the same canyon. You found the pot growers handgun, where he also doubles as a pornographer and lost his camera he was taking pictures with? He must have had a bad day.

Booty or Trash? I consider all excess/ratty sling material as being trash.

Biners are suspect. I'd only leave one of mine if I had dropped it previously from a considerable height. Or one I found in dubious circumstances, or had found/hadn't purchased myself.

Booty?
Pitons
water bottles
cig lighters
novels
towels
shoes
camera
hats
shirts
stuff sacks
And once, back in junior high, I came across a girl who had been accidentally left behind, and now she's been my wife for 28 years.

We did Birch Hollow last weekend. There was no webbing on R1, so we rigged some. Other than that we left nothing.

lets see as far as booty...
Found camera, ATC, and carbiner in a big dried pothole in Behunin. Other than that not to much.
...besides just finding stuff, have you guys ever left or lost anything?
I forgot a sweet brand-new knife on a rock at the bottom of R1 in Englestead. It was only after the next rappel, once we pulled ropes, that I noticed hahaha!
both of these were in 2009

It's been at least 10 years since I last bought webbing or quick-links. I keep my stash supplied with crap I remove from the canyons. My only bitch is the noobs who insist on adding a third and fourth layer to the anchor always use those big heavy quick-links rated to hold up a couple dump trucks. I prefer the small 1/4" quick links... That and noob's choice of webbing colors usually sucks.

My best canyon for booty used to be Mystery. At the Mystery Springs rappal I'd always check the pothole mid-rappel behind the boulder and the one at the bottom and usually find something cool. I've pulled a dozen biners, a couple figure 8's, one ATC and a very cool pocket knife out of those potholes, along with a bunch of trash.

Interesting that you found this in Birch. We did it on Monday and that stuff wasn't there. We moved webbing from a horizontal tree log wedged in the creek bed to the boulder so that the pull would be shorter. Everything else was just rap rings or quick links. Changes quickly it seems!

Two weeks ago we collected about 100' of new webbing with quick links from Not Teirdrop in Moab.

You have been waiting for weeks to drum up the couage to strike at me and this is what you bring? A cheap shot at a trip with my family? You need to go back to the science lab and draw something else up before I pull your pants down and take you over my knee in front of the lady's.

And a little FYI.... The trade routes are by far the best place to collect booty. :2thumbs:

There is a post on Bogley somewhere recently about the guy who went back to pick up his webbing at not Tierdrop after he had gone thru and it sounds like you have it?
Went and found it.

HAHAHA. spank me!

since when did i even mention or imply anything about your family? i'm not even sure my intent was to insult you. i was joking about this statement you made when you were bragging on the yahoo groups -

Some of the info you are getting in regards to the Black Hole is total crap.
I went through May 28th and again last week. The Black Hole is currently filled
with water and you will have a lot of swimming. I've been through the BH
approximately 25 times and only seen more water a couple of times. You will have
several lengthy swims before you even reach the Black Hole proper.

didn't mean to twist your words by quoting them nearly verbatim. what's with the persecution complex? :roflol:

Not to deter from the conflict at hand, but I lost a petzl mini-traxion in Lost Park Canyon about six weeks ago. It is attached to a black prusik loop. Definitely the most expensive canyon booty I have ever lost. Unless it has been hit by a flood in the last month, I can assure that the pulley was in good working order when I lost it, if anybody feels like looking for it.

...now back to your regularly scheduled argument...

About 10 years ago I lost a Garmin eTrex GPS in the...... drum roll please..... :drums: .....Black Hole.

About a year later someone found it and mailed it back to me.... it had washed down canyon about a mile from where I lost it, but it still worked and I still use it..... pretty sweet. :2thumbs:

I've only found booty in a canyon twice: (Not counting extra webbing.)
In (tiny no-rappel little-kid-friendly) Shelf Canyon in Zion I found a brand new figure 8. Why would someone TAKE a figure 8 into that place?
At the base of the last but optional rap in Spry I found a couple of new harnesses, rap devices, carabiners, and webbing. Thanks to Bogley, I was able to find the owner.

Why would someone TAKE a figure 8 into that place?

because they were using it as a route to do spry (http://www.bogley.com/forum/showthread.php?30878-NPS-Two-Zion-Canyon-Rescues-Conducted-By-Rangers)

Engelstead is always good for picking up 50-100 feet of webbing. That big rappel - practically everyone HAS to put on new pieces of webbing, or two, or three... I'm getting a little low, wish they would open Engelstead sometime soon.

Also found an Ibis hook in Englestead, ATC and Biner in the big pothole in spry. Spry is one of my favorite webbing canyons. I have also found an anchor in Pine Creek strapped with backpack webbing. Found about 80 feet of 11mm rope in Tierdrop 2 years ago.

I always wanted to take a metal detector into Pine Creek. I wonder how many belay devices you can find in the Cathedral.

On the canyon booty question I'll plead ignorance. How do you determine when webbing, or a nice redundant anchor station ought to be removed? The "no-bolt ethic" has me a bit puzzled. Is it really more aesthetically pleasing or less environmentally impacting to leave a pile of rocks (cairn) or dead man's anchor in the bottom of a pot hole (for example) rather than a tidy anchor-bolts-and-webbing station off to the side? Seems like you mess up the symmetry of the pot hole by doing so. Ok, like I said I'm pleading ignorance so I'm prepared for the onslaught that may ensue!

natural anchors are removable. A dead man anchor changes the canyon till the next flash flood, webbing around a rock can be removed. Bolts are permanent and will scar the rock for years and years. the idea is to change the canyon as little as possible.
