June 6, 2011 - Three people including a guide died on Thursday after being carried away by a wave while canyoning in France's mountainous southeast, police said.
Four others survived a sudden rise in the water level of the Pussy canyon brought on by heavy rains in the Savoy region, police said.
Rescuers found the three dead after launching a search and rescue operation involving a helicopter during bad weather.
The dead are a guide from the area as well as a man and a woman aged between 30 and 40, police said, adding that the accident happened after an upstream water retention basin overflowed.
There was no immediate confirmation of the couple's nationality.
The three were killed by falling or drowning, with one of them found at the bottom of a large waterfall, police said.
Canyoning is a sport involving sliding, jumping and rappelling waterfalls and mountain streams into gorges.
