I recently moved to SLC and have been surprised at how split the community is. There seems to be a very conservative and a very liberal group, neither has much in common with the other. Are there community forums either online or in real life where people from both groups meet up to hash out their differences?

The conservatives in SLC make loggers in the Pacific Northwest look like hippies! Just have to read the comments on Salt Lake Tribune news articles. Neither group seems to have a clue about how the other sees the world

Just to clairfy, you are looking for a political ONLY forum/community, right? ...And not what Bogley has, a outdoor community, with a political section?

I like the political disscussions here at Bogley; it can get heated but we mostly avoid the personal insults and attacks found in so many web based political disscussions. But I'd be interested to hear what else you find reverse-dyno.

I am looking for political only forums, correct. Those that seek to address the large political divide in the SLC community. I would think that bogely attracts predominantly liberals, and not the conservative groups, like members of the Tea party, etc.

Political forums on the internet seem like a really poor choice. Why don't you try facebook, I see plenty of people doing this with there status updates. HA HA

I can see how you might assume that but there are plenty of conservatives to argue with here on Bogley, some of them even manage to make a valid point once in awhile. :haha:

I think you're wrong. Yes, Bogley does have a political forum, but Bogley attracts people because it's a predominantly outdoor forum. If you're around long enough you'll see that there's quite an array of political ideologies here. People don't come to Bogley for the politics, they come to share their love of the outdoors.

you'd be incorrect in this assumption... plenty of tea-bagger types around here. :roflol:

I'd say this is a "real" community forum.

From what I have seen, politics is best discussed person to person, and by people that actually know what they are talking about. Online forums tend to be too open and are dominated by people that have no clue about what they are talking about. By linking real world meetings, and online discussions you should be able to improve the quality of the debate. People are less likely to insult each other after they have met each other.

From the number of people I have seen in the great outdoors around SLC, I would say that outdoor forums are not a good place to get a cross representation of the people that live here. I recently met a Utah native that never heard of the San Rafael Swell. She obviously did not do much outdoors.

One Utah native that has not heard of the San Rafel Swell is not the best sample to base your opinions on you may want to try to get a larger sample for your opinions in the future ;) -- maybe since you are a liberal you only go to the places that liberals go to the great outdoors, been horseback riding recently? didn't think so.. Rock crawling? etc..

I find it interesting that you only want to talk to people "who actually know what they are talking about" as most of the people who actually know what they are talking about have already chosen a point of view and you will be hard pressed to change it. Now if you were to take say the independent and 'uneducated" you would have a better chance of swaying them to your cause to push through your agenda (sorta like what presidential candidates do  )

as for best discussed person to person.. that can be up for debate as well.. ,have you ever attended many city counsel meetings? if not go check out Holidays next city council meeting and you will find plenty of yelling etc :)

That is my point for asking. I want a place where people are not yelling. In the online world people cannot yell, so instead they make stupid comments that do not address the issues at hand. If people do not agree on the facts, it is hard to have a discussion. In other words, if they do not know what they are talking about…

If I am an evolutionary biologist, and you do not believe in evolution, then how can we talk about it? Facts are not relative.

I have no agenda, except to try and figure out why both the Democrat and the Republican Party seem to be having a rather hard time governing the US right now. One reason that might be the case is the complete lack of just what I am asking for, a community forum where people can discuss why they believe what they believe!

You may want to relax a little on the whole facts thing.. what is a fact to one person is an aberration to another. If you want people to discuss things openly and without rancor you will need to be a little lax on what is fact and what is not :) -- Just because I do believe in evolution doesn't mean that I am unable to argue for creationism if only to understand the other sides point of view a little better.
You could also look at the issue as a historical one as to why the democrat and Republican parties have always had difficulty governing the US, or ignore the parties completely and look at system changes instead of treating the obvious wounds that may and are often not the initial cause...

In the end what you are looking for does not currently exist.. but I bet you could create it

You might just want to check out our Politial Forum here:

If it's not your cup of tea, maybe it's lacking your contribution. :cool2:
