Favorite remote car camping

This post is stemming off the favorite remote camping spot. If its to close please mods combine. I am wondering favorite non-organized camping spot. Meaning no park rangers, leash laws for my mutts. No needs for showers, porta potties or even humans for that matter.

A little 4 wheeling is fine but don't want to get to crazy. We normally go backpacking but the wife is 6 months pregnant and wanna do some comfortable excursions. I might also take the dirt bike if theres room.

We like the cub river area but its a little too cold for that area right now.

There are plenty of spots I like near Dead Horse Point (near Moab) that has no restrictions, and I have never seen anyone else camp there.

For those who canyoneer, it's close to the Granary Canyon trailhead.

It's great because it's free, remote, plenty of pine trees, great views of the La Sal Mts. and has 3G coverage (ATT) so I can stream my Netflix to my phone while everyone else is asleep...haha.

Oh, and a 2WD car can reach it, although you gotta take it slow in some spots due to rocks.

And if you need anything, you are about 20mins from Moab.

I can give ya coordinates if you're interested.

We were up in the La Sals last year and it was great. Thinking it might be a bit too cold/wet for the same area. Id be interested in checking out the spot you have in mind.

This isn't in the La Sals, just to clarify. La Sals is good, however. But I was there a month ago, doing Granary Canyon amongst others, and it's dry as can be in that area.

If it takes you to "long road", that's where you need to go, but for some reason, you might need to scroll up on the map to see the green arrow (google maps doesn't like me :cry1: ). That's where it is.




Note: that's not my secret area, but it's within a 1/4 mile. But this is a good one, as well.

Also for somewhere close that is nice that doesn't get a lot of people Harker Canyon south of Vernon is nice or even just hit up Simpson Springs on the PE trail.

Lots of really good spots on the North Slope of the Uintas. The West Fork of Blacks Fork is a pretty drainage.


Anybody know of a good spot east of Moab that a 2WD LCV can make it to?

muley point on the south side of cedar mesa. it overlooks the san juan river and you are looking into monument valley. it can be windy. 2wd accessible. lots of riding and dayhiking options.44722

There is a forest service road just west of Panguitch Lake that had a pretty cool spot we hit a few years back. We needed a quick spot since we were late in the day and we wanted to get some sleep before doing the drive into SLC.

Simpson Springs looks like my kind of campground. Reminds me of some places in western South Dakota

Is the spring big enough to swim in?

Nope not big enough to swim in.. it is more of a seep.. but maybe with this years water level.. You could always head west a bit more to fish springs and do some swimming :)

Simpson springs is a great spring / fall campout. some cool exploring, but not really much actual hiking trails unless i've missed something. and if you go around the back of those mountains to death canyon, some great old mines to explore (or fall to you doom in).

I went to tomisch butte in the swell early this month and its surprisingly a nice place to camp. some good trees, river, beautiful view.

Hit up the LaSal mountain loop just past Moab again. It was a busy weekend but found a couple of great sites. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Still open to get other great ideas.
