Hey all you Gopro pros. My buddy bought a GOPRO. He shot a bunch of video at Powell and downloaded it to his Apple computer. He made me a copy and when you look at the files they have a .vob extension. I cannot edit them in any of my programs, I also tried it on my sons apple I movie it won't open them either. Any ideas how I can edit these files or am I screwed?

he gave you a dvd movie, not the actual files. the gopro extensions are .mp4. if you transcode it to something that plays on a dvd player, they are .vob. tell him to give you the data files, not a "dvd" movie.

That is what I thought but he loaded the video onto his apple and then cleared the card. He can only find vob files on his apple? What should the extension be for data files?

I have decided that video editing softwares do not like me. I got the mp4 files and window movie maker will not download them. Says it is not a supported file type.:angryfire:

Windows LIVE Movie Maker will edit .MP4 files, but WLMM is only available on Windows 7 machines. It's the best free video editor available today.
There are a ton of ways to convert .MP4 files to whatever extension you'd like as well, depending on what editing software you end up going with.
Looking for free video converters online will almost certainly provide you with a nice virus, so only go to trusted sites.
Try Hamster Free Video Converter, available here at cnet.download.com:

I ended up editing it on my Sons Apple. I hate to admit, have never been an apple fan but I movie is the sweetest editing software I have used. Much better then my Power Director and Roxio. Am having a little trouble with background music right now but the editing portion was designed for a dummy like me.:hail2thechief:

I need some more help, any of you who use I Movie I am able to pull in background music but cannot mix it so the music is in the background with the voices overriding it? Any help would be appreciated.
Mark
Edit I figured it out thanks

@Garbanzo (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=18553) edits all of his GoPro footage in iMovie, he's pretty happy with it. It seems like if you have a new PC or Mac, you needn't look any further for a decent editing program than Windows Live Movie Maker or iMovie for your HD .MP4 files.

The raw video that I have been messing with is about 90 minutes long. If I had loaded this on my Windows machine and tried to edit in my Power Director it would of crashed my machine several times. I recently purchased a new box that was suppose to be built to handle video editing, it is better then my old box but this size file would of crushed it. My Sons Apple laptop ate it up like nothing. I have really been impressed. I am not willing to spend the time to make my videos fancy etc but for what I did this morning it ruled. May start using my Countor HD again now that I have moved to the DARK SIDE.

So you've got a new Windows PC that doesn't handle the video? Something must be wrong, the laptop I use is about 4 years old with Windows 7 installed on it.

Prime Systems in Kaysville built it. When discussing my problems with my old box they said big video projects and windows do not like each other? Everyone I know that try's to edit video on windows is always complaining about crashing. My laptop that is just a year old crashes constantly when I try to edit in either Power Director or Roxio?
Edit
Sometimes it may not crash but the machine will sit in limbo for substantial time while it catches up.

They've seen too many Mac vs PC commercials. :roflol:
Every time I'm producing a video from a 3 hour ride, it's between 6 and 8 GB of footage, @2 hours, cut down to @3 minutes. - and it's about once a week.
Here are just SOME of my videos, I've got multiple youtube accounts, 250+ on this one:

If those guys are telling you that video projects and Windows don't get along too well, it's time to get a different I.T. professional.

Sorry, read it the second time. I'm not bragging, just showing that all of the video I produce almost on a weekly basis are all done on about 4 different Windows machines, depending on where I am.
The thing that makes editing software crash is sometimes the RAM and/or how many processes are going on. The "curse" of Windows is since it's so open, there's usually a bunch of 3rd party programs running in the background (like a unicorn wallpaper or Star Wars Solitaire). I guess I'm just good at keeping my machine clean so I rarely have problems.

The frame mount video is cool. Have you shot any video from the frame on a ride?
