View Full Version : Good Hike for Wedding Proposal?

Hi All,
I'm hoping our state's hiking gurus might be able to help me find a nice easy, romantic, secluded hike. I'm planning to propose to my GF. She loves to hike, but has problems with her feet. We've gone on a few hikes together, and she just can't do the long or strenuous ones. Less time on her feet = better.
I don't want her to be completely exhausted when I get down on my knee at the destination, and I don't want her to remember this as the day I had to carry her and her new ring down the mountain.
I'll have the ring later this week, and I'm planning to propose as soon as the weather and snowmelt progress will allow. I'm willing to wait for the right conditions.
My thoughts on the ideal hike:
south of Farmington, north of American Fork.
no longer snowpacked (by next week)
1-2 miles one-way to payoff
not too steep (less than 1000 ft increase/mi)
beautiful destination (waterfall or overlook or something)
limited popularity (or times of day that we can be alone up there)
Options so far:
Battle Creek Falls
Rocky Mouth (too short, too busy?)
Donut Falls (too busy?)
Mill B North to overlook
Brighton Lakes (still snowpacked?)
Frary Peak (too long?)
Bell Canyon to first falls (too steep?)
Heughs Canyon
...others....?
I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to review.
Cheers,
-- Mickey

First off- CONGRATS on the upcoming engagement!
Going off the ideal list, I'd say Rotary Park up City Creek Canyon would be a perfect spot. The downside is its not open to cars until Memorial Day.
Heughs Canyon is fun- but the falls are up there a ways. It is secluded though.
Ford Canyon (Centerville) might be a good option. It's uncrowded. It's short, but might be a bit steep going down to the falls.
Killyon's Canyon is fun. Probably uncrowded.
Baer Canyon is another option. More people, but still not immensely popular
The lower falls up Adams Canyon is reasonably short and uncrowded since most people fly on by up the canyon. You might have a winner there.

Battle Creek Falls - Lots of traffic, no seclusion, not my first choice.
Rocky Mouth - This was my first though when I read your request. Some traffic not bad if you pick the right time.
Donut Falls - Busy
Mill B North to overlook - Yawn
Brighton Lakes (still snowpacked?) - Awesome place, but you will be waiting a couple months
Frary Peak - Long ass hike and you have waited too long as the bugs will be out.
Bell Canyon to first falls - Or just to the lake. The stream on the east side offers seclustion, beauty, and an easy hike. This would probably be my choice.
Heughs Canyon - Not a bad choice.
Ghost Falls might work for what you are looking for.

The hiking is easy. A map is here:

It might see more traffic than you would like, but its mostly mountain bikers on the nearby trail. I've been to the falls 4 times this past week and always had them to myself.
A few other thoughts not on your list:
Hidden Falls - BCC (http://climb-utah.com/WM/hiddenfalls.htm) - Short easy hike.
Secert Lake - LCC, busy, snow packed at the moment.
The Unitas (http://climb-utah.com/Uinta/index.htm) will open up shortly. Hundreds of place there that met your criteria.

Not super familiar with the area to give a recommend. But got a cool thought when reading your request. You should go there before hand and stash the ring. Like maybe under a rock or other hidden location. then ask her to look under said rock and surprise her on bended knee when she finds it.
:2thumbs:
Also another idea if you go to a kinda crowded place. My buddy did this at a lighthouse at coronado (san diego area). Ask a random passerby to please take your picture with your GF. Then say "could you please take one more?" drop down on knee and ask the question while random person takes your pic. It nice to have a permanent pic of the event ya know?
Good luck!

Thanks for your input, guys.
Deathcricket: I thought about doing something like your first idea with geocaching as a guise.
I'm thinking that Lower Bell Reservoir may be just perfect (thanks Iceaxe). There are a few caches up there, so we could set out to find them all. My special hide could be just another cache to find.
I'm a little nervous, though (especially as I post this on the internet), that someone will go comb the area for the cache and steal the ring. I think I will hold the ring myself, and the cache will contain some special message for my girl...
I'm still open to more ideas, as the weather doesn't look like it will participate in the plan until after Memorial Day. Please keep the ideas coming. :)
Thanks,

The geo cache will work.... so long as you are the only one that actually has the waypoint... How about a geo cashe that has a blanket, a nice bottle of wine and two glasses...... keep the ring in your pocket if you are worried about it getting nicked.... the geo cashe will have the same effect.

I think we have a winner.. heck you could have a friend up there set it up for you just a hour or so before so it is all nice and fresh.
