In Sled Pulling, just as in any motorsport, they have rules and regulations on the vehicles. General regulations for all classes are a 26" maximum hitch point where the hook from the Sled attaches to the truck by chain, hitch point distance from the center of the rear axle out to 42-44" (some rules call for 42" and some other places 44", but in any case it has to be at the rear most point of the body, in other words if you backed into a wall, the hitch would still hit the wall first), transmissions that came with the truck...allowed to be modified, 37" tires and larger...not allowed, D.O.T. tires only...no cut tires, original factory suspension...can be lifted by springs...suspension cannot be lengthened, weight racks and the hanging of weight...racks + weight cannot exceed 46" from center-line of front axle, trucks have a maximum allowed weight...including driver...not to exceed 8000 pounds.
Those are basic with weight now starting to be allowed to 8500 because of the newer Fords weighing in just over 8k. There are a few different classes and what really separates these classes are turbo sizes which are measured by the inlet bore. So, the intake side of the turbo's diameter is measured in inches. The stock class varies due to the manufacturer, 2.6, 2.8 and 3.0 In the stock classes this is still something they're working on. You have Ford's now with twin turbo setups and the Chevrolet's now with a 2.5 turbo, much larger than the Dodge and older of the other manufacturers. They're working on classes for the guys that race their trucks as well that run twin turbo setups. Ever changing.
I'm in Work Stock. My turbo is stock, but what puts me above the Stock Class is setup. That's what you are seeing being modded. I got rid of my rear bumper, since my hitch point can be pushed backed further, instead of being past my bumper. This is an advantage over a stock truck. I get to block my rear suspension, which means as the weight comes towards the back of my truck, my suspension doesn't drop past the 26" hitch height, I kind of stay right there...outside of some tire squish. Keeping a 26" height throughout the Pull is an advantage over stock. I have a weight bar and weight. Instead of making up the 8000 pound limit and putting the weight in the bed of the truck, I get to hang it off the front using tractor suitcase weight. Again, having the remaining weight hanging off the front is an advantage over a stock truck. I could throw in injectors and have a custom built stock turbo which allows for more air flow, but that's later down the road. I went the way of gears. My truck originally had 3.73 ring and pinion gears. I now have really lowered it to 5.13's. This helps my stock turbo and engine perform better. Allowed in the rules and an advantage. I added a front locker, which locks the front two axle shafts together making it true posi (positive) traction. On automatics, they have torque converters. The TC is the part of the transmission that hydraulically puts power to the wheels in every gear. For many years now automatic transmissions have overdrive. That's what you feel on the highway or up to speeds past say 50mph. It feels like a 4th gear in a three speed transmission. What that is, is torque converter lock up. It's now a one to one drive going through the tranny. This is a very powerful thing going on in an auto. If you can use it say from second on up, the vehicle is much more powerful. Stock transmissions will break if the converter was locked through all the gears. Since mine is built, I added a switch that allows me to lock the converter whenever I see fit. I also have a switch to turn off 1st gear and start in 2nd.
Kind of a crash course, sorry about that Dan. This is just the basics and I'm tired as hell, being after 4am here :lol8: Thanks Dan and the rest for the compliments!
