It's official! :banana::banana::banana:
We've got a bunch of folks coming out to Zion for a Bogley Fest the weekend of June 18 & 19. Plus several of the local folks have already marked their calendars.
The big, don't-miss-it-or-we'll-write-about-you-in-rubbish-bin BBQ will be held on Sunday June 19 at the Watchman campground, group site E001.
:beer::rockit::party:
Anyone who would like to camp at the group site is welcome to do so (up to the max of 40 people). Unfortunately, I could not get any group sites for Saturday. But there are still some individual sites at Watchman available (check out Zion Campground Info (http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/watchman-campground.htm) or www.recreation.gov reservations (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Watchman_Campground_Ut/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70923&topTabIndex=CampingSpot)
We can use this thread to figure out who is bringing what on Sunday. And to plan for some canyons/hikes or rides during the weekend or the days before or after. Pretty sure a few of us plan to make this a long weekend.
If anyone wants to volunteer to lead a canyon that would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure.
Also, help for securing permits for any of the canyons within the park would be very nice too. The lottery for June is closing soon as is the opening of reservations. Unfortunately, I'll be camping that day and probably unable to access the internet.
Check back here for more details and add to the thread to tell us you're coming and where you plan to stay.
I have to nail down a firm schedule but I'd like to get down there on the 16th and stay through the 21st or 22nd. I'll probably have the wife and son with me the 16th, 17th and 18th so I'll be focused on easier family friendly hikes those days. Then I'll be available for something more aggressive the 19th, 20th, 21st and maybe 22nd. I still need to look at permits for 19-22.
Since the wife and son will miss the Sunday night camp-dinner I hope we can plan a group dinner (camp or in town) for Friday and/or Saturday nights...?
I'll be talking to Cody and Josh and trying to drag them down too.
Looking forward to it. :2thumbs:

Woohoo! Looking forward to it.
Oh, and a message for the lurkers:
This is an OPEN-INVITATION group camp out! It's not a formal guided trip. There's not really anything formal about it; it's a bunch of people (who mainly just know each other 'cause we met on the interwebs) camping and hiking together. And YOU are welcome to come an join us! Plan your own campsite (or talk to Paul about joining the group site mentioned above, but that is only available one night) and plan your own day hikes (or bike rides) or use this thread to talk to other participants with whom you would like to camp or hike.
There's loads of good advice (and even more bad advice :haha:) on this site; jump in with the planning now and join us in Zion in June!

Where you live close you need to drop by the visitor center and watch the short film so you can use the online Zion Express System. It is the only way to get Zion permits.

I have no personal knowledge, but someone mentioned to me the idea of camping up around Gooseberry Mesa. Of course, Sunday you can always stay at the group site.

Seeing I missed last year, I'm going to try to be there this year. :-)
Added the event to the New "Calendar" feature, in the red navigation bar at the top. Check it out! BTW, tell me if anyone is able to edit it? If not, give me the details and I'll fill in the rest.

I'm dying to go but just can't swing the airfare. Not many affordable flights options to choose from Jacksonville to Vegas that time of year. Have fun everyone!
Tangent: I did find dirt cheap airfare into Denver in late July and will be trying to convince my Denver buddy to get out further East in Utah with me then. If anyone around that side of the Utah is interested, pm me and we'll keep in touch!
"Mosquito cove is closed" ?
That is too bad. What happened? What is this mesa camping the someone mentioned? Planning to get there also, just have to confirm that one June trip (planned earlier) doesn't conflict. Checking on that now.

Yeah, it Was closed down by the BLM due to the flooding a month ago. I talked to the BLM in St. George back in March and the latest word is that there is no ETA for reopening this year.
I believe the Mesa they are referring to is Smith Mesa which is before the town of Virgin on the North side. Im not sure exactly where from there however...

I thought Chere was talking about camping near Gooseberry Mesa? But I'm worthless in this regard; I know no mesas in the STG/Springdale area, and my camping in Zion has been either backcountry or Watchmans.
But, while I'm posting: I wanted to remind that I have slots available for Subway on Sunday.
I'm also pondering a trip down Orderville for Saturday. Either as a Birch finish or just by itself. Anybody interested in doing either of these?
We'll be sticking around Mon/Tue and maybe Wed as well. Considering Fat Man's as an overnight or *maybe* 3 days in Right Fork. But I think the later may be pushing it with my family depending on how much other stuff we do on the weekend.

I was talking about Gooseberry.... if Aaron wants to ride the mesa that is. Great camping spots up there. I don't know anything about Smith Mesa. I won't be camping with the rest of you I have house guests that weekend. But still plan on hiking Subway. Maybe something else depending on what is going on.

Let's pick a day for an AM ride on Gooseberry, Chere. Is Saturday your only option for that, or are you available to ride on Fri or Mon?

I'll say, not from personal experience necessarily, that it's really easy to climb over the fence into Mosquito Cove. Just sayin'.
A bit late as usual, but I'm working on getting things together. Paul -- any spots left on permits? If no, np especially since I didn't get my act together in time to register for some myself. *sigh!*. How easy is it to go to the required presentation to sign up for the Zion Express Permit thing? I'd like to do that while I'm there if possible.
Is there still any space at the group site for Sunday? Open/flexible for Saturday, either camping at that mesa or maybe a room in town (if that entices my wife to come along and I hurry).

Still many available slots on my Subway permit for Sunday. Also no problem camping at the group site that night. Not sure what we'll do on Saturday yet. Maybe some folks doing a MTB ride on Gooseberry in the AM and then taking some kids through Keyhole. I should be around on Fri, Mon and Tue as well. For grins, I picked up an Orderville permit for Mon thinking maybe Birch with an Orderville finish. Also I'm considering doing Fat Man's start to a 2 night backpack through Paranweep starting Mon. Lot's of options! I hope your wife can come too, the more the merrier.
Awesome, I will definitely be there, and plan to camp at the group site on Saturday. Would like to join for Subway also. Will figure out Saturday as we go along. I could probably stay and do something Monday, should know soon (depends on Kathi's schedule, if she is going, etc).

Excellent! Note, the group site used for the BBQ and available for anyone who wants to camp there is reserved for Sunday 6/19, NOT Saturday.
I think the folks doing Subway on 6/19 are:
1. Paul (me)
2. Robin
3. Aaron
4. Jon (friend from Santa Cruz)
5. Jack (Jon's son)
6. Chere
7. Alison
8. Nick
9. Erik
10. Don
11. Pubalz
12. Pubalz's Daughter
PERMIT FULL
Looks like Kathi's family reunion is the same weekend. Fortunately I'm being allowed to escape that and come to Zion instead :) So probably I'm in for something Monday also.
I was thinking your subway plan was for the 19th...
I need to get Kyla to make a committment to this trip, but will you add me to the subway list for the 18th? I'll likely drop out if Kyla and E are still around on the 19th but that seems unlikely at this point so I want a spot on your trip...

Ugh. Yes it is for 6/19 Sunday. Same day as the BBQ. I just fixed the post. Sorry. Don, I think that makes it even more likely for you to be able to attend?
Yeah, I'd like to do the subway with you on the 19th! :cool2:
No reservation permits available but I'd like to do Das Boot as well. If we can get the walk-up permit it'll only be for 6 people and they will have to be on the Subway permit in order to do both. Maybe a few of us could split off, or leave earlier, and do Das Boot and meet the rest of the group at the intersection to hike the Subway together... Assuming we can get a permit, any interest?
ststephen
05-05-2011, 02:10 PM
I would be up (or down?) with splitting up. But we need to make sure we have the timing right and if folks leave the TH separately they are confident in route finding and know where to meet up with us again. Sounds doable though.

The subway trail is pretty straight forward, as long as the main party can get down to where the trail enters the water they would just wait for us there. If we leave earlier we could be there waiting for them...
Assuming we can get the walk-up permit I would guess that Aaron and Erik would want to be on the Das Boot list...?

Hi all, my friend & I are hoping to get out there but due to odd work schedules our timing will be Sun-Fri, with Sun & Fri being travel days. I'd love to meet folks, share good times around the campfire & barbeque, and share canyon time with anyone who's still around. I have a decent amount of experience & my partner is an enthusiastic newbie who wants to see what's up with all this cool slot canyon stuff I keep going on about. Greetings from MI & we hope to meet you out there,
Wayne & Laura

You'll be around Sunday the 12th through Friday the 17th or Sunday the 19th through Friday the 24th?
There should still be people around Sunday the 19th and a few of us will be around for the first couple days of that week (I hope to stay through the 21st or 22nd). Hit Paul (ststephen) with a PM and I'll bet you could share the group site he has reserved for the 19th...

Hey Don, sounds great! I was actually leaving the dates a bit flexible (we haven't booked yet) in the hopes of getting a little feedback like you just gave me as to when folks might come early or stay late. Sounds like staying late is the way to go & it let's us join for the Sunday barbeque, awesome.
Bummer we can't join you Sunday for Das Boot/Subway, I'll be looking to get Laura in there for sure, or at least the Subway. And wasn't Paul (always fun to learn someone's actual name) talking about a Misery venture? Also on my possible list, love to do that again.
Revealing my "new member-ness", how would I find Paul's PM info?
Any thoughts on your possible "more difficult stuff" on the 21st & 22nd? I'm curious to see some of the cool Zion canyons I haven't yet seen, but wasn't sure if you were thinking stuff like Telephone or Heaps.
Thanks!

Pubalz: you're in on my Subway! There's one slot left. If the permit works out we can split up the group and meet up where Das Boot joins back in.
The Good Cop: welcome! We haven't figured out things for sure yet for Monday and beyond so I can't promise what will happen. But I think your odds are best at finding some folks to hook up with if you come for the BBQ and stay Mon-Fri vs. leaving Zion on the Fri when most of us are just arriving.

Ok, so here is what I'm thinking.
I finally got a trip commitment from my wife. She and I will be taking separate cars down on June 16 or 17. She will be driving down with her friend Lyndsay, our son E, and Lindsay's sons. They plan to stay through Saturday afternoon. So I'll be doing some easy family hikes those days. Camp sites are all booked up so I'm not sure where I'll be staying with the family yet.
After they leave I have permission to stay through June 25th. I have to be home on the 26th for my birthday. Cody, Gonzo, and Bugby are looking into what days that week they can make it down. None of them will make the Bogley weekend, but all three hope to spend parts of the following week in Zion.
I'll do the subway with Paul on the 19th, then whatever we decide on for Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday while Paul is around. I plan to try for a mystery walk-up permit every day until I get one, and would also like to get up Lady Mountain. So plans are pretty fluid still.
I'd like to crash with the group Sunday, but since everything is booked I don't know where I'll be camping and I can't spend every night behind the bar... :haha:

rmj my understanding is that to backpack the Narrows you have to get your permit months in advanced and I think it is still closed right now anyway.

OK, let's plan on Saturday AM biking on Gooseberry. Probably good to start early, eh? Pretty sure my friends Jon and Jack will want to ride too. We would be coming from Springdale. I think there is access to Gooseberry both from the Springdale and from Hurricane? Is the road OK from Springdale this year?
Then, if we have interest I know Aaron wanted to do Keyhole again and take Jon and Jack through it. Perhaps ride 8 or 9 to 12 or 1 and then head to Zion to do Keyhole?

Paul (or anyone) -- any info on this Gooseberry thing? Sounded like some people going to be there on Saturday? Still haven't figured out where I am camping other than Sunday night.
I see the river is running high right now, though not sure the chances it will by the time we get there? If it is -- any other kayak / whitewater types that would be interested in running the river? There are two sections, both in the III/IV range, and both of which look awesome: http://www.eddyflower.com/RunDetailstabs.aspx?RunId=266#/home (Narrows) and http://www.eddyflower.com/RunDetailstabs.aspx?RunId=266#/home (Park)

I just scooped up a site in Watchman on Saturday night and I'd like to crash in the group site and BBQ on Sunday. Any details on the BBQ part as far as what to bring or how all of that usually works? This is my first Bogley Fest. Stoked!
Sounds like there is now one empty spot. It would be great to have you along Nick! Of course, there is still risk that it won't be open :eek2:
But, I'm optimistic that it will (just) open in time.
Alison - sorry to hear that Big Worm can't come. It's been even a little touch-and-go for me. I'm passing up on a business trip to Europe and I'll have to be on a conference call Tuesday night at midnight to 2am to present to the folks overseas. I think I'll start the presentation with a photo from the day's canyon :fitz:
Do we have an alternate in case it doesn't open in time? It would be a long day but maybe a peek into the barracks?

I would be happy to have you stay in my site as well but there is one possible issue. My reservation says the site is limited to 2 vehicles and 6 people. Obviously that's under the people limit, just not sure if there is some other place to park? I've never camped in Watchman CG, anyone know? Or maybe someone else from the group camping that night has room for an extra vehicle at their spot nearby? Also, is there a decent amount of tent space in these spots for more than a couple of tents? If we can figure that out, you are totally welcome, Pubalz.

Chere and I are in an interesting pinch and curious as to some solutions. We will be driving in from STG to hike Subway on Sunday, pending it's opening. We have to leave our kiddos all day in STG which isn't a big deal since my oldest is 16 and they are fine to be alone. I've heard Subway is an all day hike. At what time are we starting the hike and at what time is an anticipated finish? How in the world are we going to hike all day, drive back to STG (no idea how long that takes) to get kiddos and come back to the BBQ? That sounds like a lot of work/drivetime.......suggestions? Especially after hiking all day? Am I being a weenie?:cry1:

it takes me about 40 minutes from my house to zion so.
santa clara -> washington -> hurricane -> la verkin -> springdale
so about an hour an a half round trip for me..
And we can aim for an early am start time. Trailhead coffee can be ready at 5 in the morning if you want to go that early...

I've been so swamped recently, but now I'm back ready to focus on this Fest!
On the Subway hike, yes we should plan on an early start and have a back-up destination in mind. I propose meeting at the VC at 6:30. As to the back-up destination I'm going to start some queries on that. Perhaps Parunweep (especially thinking about Mineral Gulch) but we need to consider flow rates up there too.
On the BBQ: In general if folks bring their own meat/main dish and something to share (appetizer, salad, dessert) that will work out well. Jman talked about bringing a box of burgers and buns and it's great if folks bring something extra to share as well. I'm assuming the group site has several tables (since it can host 40 campers). We need some folks to sign up for charcoal as well. We have group site E001 and you can start to use it after 12pm. It's prepaid and under my name (Paul Stevens).
Saturday: is there still a group interested in a Gooseberry Mesa MTB ride? I will be coming from Springdale with my friends from Santa Cruz. Who else wants to ride in the AM? I think I may hit Keyhole in the PM as well. We could also pick a restaurant and time for Saturday evening to meet for food or drinks.
Alison & Chere: seems like there are a few folks who will come to the BBQ from StG. Maybe one of them could drive your kids? Is it 3 or 4 between you? Offer to pay for round-trip gas maybe? :naughty: The other option is to turn them loose in the NP for the day with food and some $. Is the 16 yo trustworthy to be the shepherd for the day? I agree the RT drive will suck after the hike.

I was hoping we could meet at the trailhead. (6 or 6:30 works for me.) I guess we'd have to pre-coordinate the car shuttle, but that's easy. If we meet at the VC at 6:30 I doubt we'll get on the trail before 8...
I'll bring some charcoal and a dutch oven or two to the BBQ. I was thinking I'd make some dutch oven dessert. I'll also be bringing Utah beer and plan to camp in the group site sunday night.
I'd like to get into Mineral Gulch as well. Seems like a good alternate, depending on water flow. If flow is too high and the subway is closed, what's our alternate to the alternate?
Also, Saturday morning a group of us are looking at a family hike into Taylor Creek in the kolob section. We will be bringing kids so it won't be an early start or a fast pace. More on that as the plan firms up. Here's Taylor Creek info: http://www.citrusmilo.com/zionguide/taylorcreek.cfm

On Subway meet up: we probably need to first confirm if a group is doing Das Boot. The Booters need more time. As I recall Pubalz was going to try for a permit day before? Maybe we set a slightly later meeting time at the TH for non-Booters and then if the permit materializes the Das Boot group subtracts some time from that for their start?

Don't know what I am doing Sat morning as I am torn between mountain biking and the family hike. Seriously I need a clone! Send one to the hike and one to bike. I know my kids were really looking forward to Keyhole but still don't know if Sarah's arm will be up to the challenge. I am bringing Colorado beer. I just thought I'd share that with ya'll! It is a very important piece of information. And that Utah beer Chere had in Moab 2 weeks ago was KICK ASS! We will be sharing. Regarding the BBQ- if we make it, I have no clue what I am bringing.

Probably. But as far as I've been able to ascertain it doesn't happen with this crowd! Yeah, Don you showed me some mighty fine UT brews in September. I'll make sure to bring some of NoCal's best just to keep the cultural exchange going.
Kurt - are we going to see you on Sunday? Or maybe come join us for a cold one on Saturday somewhere in Springdale?
Jman talked about bringing a box of burgers and buns and it's great if folks bring something extra to share as well.
Sure am. (glad you read the calendar - heh) I'm bringing a group of 8 (including myself, and 6 of them are noobs) to the BBQ only. We're not drinkers so be sure to bring some ROOTED beer (:bootyshake:) for us. I won't be able to bring any condiments except ketchup and mustard, so hopefully others can bring that.
Also, we won't be doing any canyons with the group unfortunately, as we have plans outside the park. But the fire and BBQ should be a lot of fun.
On a sidenote, I'm sure there will be thousands of pics between everyone during this fest, so what if someone brought there laptop with a multi-memory card reader, and that person can get the pics and vids from everyone, and give each group a DVD of the pics/vids of their canyons. That way, you don't have to dropbox everything... Just a suggestion that may or may not be useful to you guys.
Also (my last one, I swear, lol), just a hiking suggestion for those who are not canyoneering. There is a hidden waterfall near Weeping Rock, that everyone passes but is a awesome road-side attraction. It's called Menu Falls, and I'll try to pull up a map for ya if you are interested. It's a very quick hike - like 10min one way. A lot of visitors (even vets) don't know about it.

I'll find a way to make it to the BBQ, no drinking for me, looks like I'll have to drive back home the same night.
I can bring my laptop, only about an hour of life unless someone has a hook up. instead of cd's it would be faster if everyone brought SD cards, or thumb drives.

I called again the backcountry desk to see if there was any update on when Subway will be re-opened. I received a vague answer that the situation will be assessed within a week. It seems that the answer depends on who you talk to. Has anybody be through the bottom in the last few days? Is it still gushing?
I get the feeling they are not in a hurry to re-open it.http://www.bogley.com/forum/images/smilies/cry.gif

I sure wish I would have found this site earlier. My friend and I have had our trip to Zion planned since January and it just so happens to be during all of this. We fly into Vegas the 16th and will be leaving the 23rd. I would love the opportunity to get together with some fellow enthusiasts and have an opportunity to gain some more knowledge about canyoneering. Sean and I were out there last March and did our first couple canyons then and have been looking forward to getting back and really spending some more time in the area. I would love to meet up at the BBQ if there is still room, and possibly camp at the group site Sunday night also. Please let me know if that would work.
Thanks,

Hi Chris - yep still plenty of room at the group site. It holds 40 folks. I signed up for the minimum (20) to keep the initial cost low (it's $3/person) but we'll just increase it when we see how many people are coming. I think there might be 10 campers so far, but I haven't kept close track. The more the merrier!

At one point we were talking about some of us starting early and doing Das Boot before meeting the rest of the group at the junction. Is anyone still interested in trying this? There are 6 walk-up spots available. I could probably get to the backcountry desk Saturday morning to try for them, but since I'll be staying in St George (and with Family) Friday night and we are planing to hike Taylor Creek in the Kolob section Saturday morning it would be out of my way and would probably annoy the wife. Alright! Things are coming together. A few items I wanted to post:
Das Boot: Don - talk to Dave (Pubalz) about getting the permit. Dave said previously he would get it on Friday. It will be either 5 or 4 for Das Boot. Aaron will stick with his friend Jack. I'm on the fence. I may stick with the main group as it would take some persuading to split up with Robin and we have Mon & Tue for more canyons. We should firm when we know you have the permit and what time you will start to make the meet up at the junction as close as possible. We want to have a leisurely time in Subway AND make it back for plenty of fest time. So the Das Boot group will need to start quite early.
BBQ: So far we've got,
jman: burgers, buns, ketchup, mustard
Dave: Chili
Don: Charcoal, Dutch Oven desert, beer
Me: beer, soft drinks, burger extra stuff (cheese, tomatoes, onion), bruschetta appetizer
Just keep thinking of stuff we don't have. Like firewood! Any locals have a stash of wood they can bring up?
Saturday: I'm going to post an invite for the MTB ride in the bike forum in case bikers aren't following here. I think there is a family hike going on elsewhere if others want to join that. Anyone want to meet for Pizza on Saturday night or something else?
Can't wait to see you all around the BBQ!
What's up all. Rejoining late as usual...
Anything in particular needed for the BBQ? If not I'll just show up with some default meat and some form of snacks.
Paul, Don -- sounds like we are good for Subway? What's up with this Boot thing? Flying seat-of-pants so I'm happy to join for anything from hikes to any canyon in which we can expect a reasonable chance of survival. :)
Any spot to stay for Saturday? I can be small... Planning to stay at group site on Sunday if that's still good.

The water is going to be cold and you will be swimming in it. Not long stretches, but definitely swimming. You will be miserable without neoprene socks, those are a must-have. But I think a wetsuit will make the day more enjoyable and is probably worth your time/money...
Wetsuit or not; throw a light fleece or sweater (and maybe a fleece cap) into a dry bag and bring it along...

anyone know what time the guards leave the guard station?? 7pm? as much as I'd like to support the NPS I just don't got the money. $3 for camping yes, $25 to get in... hell no, thats more than a bottle of vadka. :lol8:
generally I see them leave at 9 pm and arrive at 7 AM.

Why don't you park by the theater and walk over the foot bridge. That has got to be cheaper.

i think that option is about $12. or if you have the cell phone # of someone who has paid they could come "pick you up" and use there pass.

Dave, I'm sending you a PM with my cell #. I'm happy to drive you in. Only thing is I don't know what time we'll finish Subway, nor if I'll have cell reception up there. But give it a try.
Everyone else: feel free to check in at the E001 site any time after 12. The reservation number is:
2-15046303. I just noticed that they have the group listed as Boy Scoot Troop 654 because I last did Reserve America reservations for that troop. How funny - we're the Bogley Boy Scout Troop tomorrow! Also give my name: Paul Stevens. We're getting an early start on the Subway (TH at 7:00) so hopefully we'll be there not too late.
See you all soon!

I did some sweet talking for the extra ten bucks :lol8: if I didn't have to drop 110 bucks for hosting last week, and 70 bucks for business license this week I would be doing fine. :lol8: next week I should have some money rolling in.
so I'm going to have to do something nice for my poor old man... I invited him up to the BBQ, and even offered to mix him one of my special drinks again :haha:.... but he wasn't interested.
the pass is good for 7 days so I'll offer to work for him on saturday and he can take my mom to Zion. It's officially been 11 years since they have gone into the park.
so I plan on getting out of here around 3, I should be in Zion around 4:30.
see ya soon,
Dave

Hello there all you Bogley-festers from this past canyon weekend. I would LOVE to see the photos you all got of Keyhole and Subway. Should we post links here in this thread or start a new one?:nod:

this is all I got... :haha: I love ya bo, you crazy tree monkey :lol8:
I'm so sorry guys that I couldn't get the burgers delivered to ya!
I wrote down Paul's (ststephen) info on a napkin and brought it down with me and someone in the car either threw it away or got stuck in the back somewhere as I couldn't find it.
I headed off actually on Saturday night, instead of Sunday so I couldn't have left them with anyone...
Next time for sure! Man, I feel so bad I missed it and everyone...:cry1:
Looking forward to the reports! Btw, I think creating a new thread for each canyon, but having the participants post their pictures and posts within the same thread would be the most beneficial and organized.
PS - I'll post my TR of the Subway with my 8 noobs within a week or so. What a good time in the Subway. Most of the sand has washed away in the slot! yay. The pools by the final rappel where deep! good times!

I'd love to see the photos too. I think it would be great if they were in their own trip report so they'd come up on the first page and all, ya know? :cool2: Sounds like you guys and gals had a blast.

I didn't take enough Keyhole pictures to warrant a whole thread, but here's a few from our group there:
