We had drawn permits for the South Coyote Buttes on Wednesday March 2nd ,so we headed off from Cache Valley at 4am Wednesday morning. We made good time to Kanab, we filled the truck with gas and grabbed one last bit to eat before heading off into the vast Paria wilderness. To enter the south coyote buttes you have to drive a few miles into Paw Hole, the sand was pretty deep so we switched over to 4WD.
Something didn't sound good when putting it in 4 high, the trucked seem to struggle getting up to Paw Hole in the sand for being in 4WD. We all figured it had to do with the deep sand so we didn't think much of it. We spent three hours hiking around exploring the south wave area, we found some pretty cool rock formations. Next we were off to setup up camp before dark. We found a great camp spot on the edge of a little knoll with two Hoodoos, there was an old fire pit right next to the hoodoos. You'll be able to see them in the camp fire shot. Come to find out, I forgot to check if the tent poles where in the bag. And they weren't! We improvised, you will see our redneck camp in the photos I post. Did I mention the wind blew all day long, well it did. Right as the sun set the wind died right off.
Come to find out the next morning driving further up the sand that my front end was not engaging to 4WD. Don't ask me how we made it into Paw Hole in 2WD. We had to change all our plans for the next three days, we found a spot we knew we could get out of and did day hikes from that camps spot. We found some pretty cool stuff out in the middle of nowhere. This was by far my most expensive trip to Northern Arizona over the past 9 years. The total cost to fix the front end of the truck stacked up to about $1800, oh well, what can you do?
