Took the scouts camping on Mirror Lake Highway 11-12 Feb. What a beautiful weekend to camp! Drove all the way to the gate and set up camp. We had hoped to build snow caves, but there wasn't quite enough snow (3-4 feet). Had we arrived 2-3 hours earlier, we could have built quinzees. Clear night with temps dropping to around zero. Clear and sunny the next day!
Breakfast consisted of zip-loc omlettes. A first for us. (2-4 eggs raw, cooked meat of your choice, sliced potatoes, sliced onions and spices in a 1 gal ziploc bag. Boil the whole thing for 10-15 minutes) I was very impressed.
Summit Co. Search and Rescue were having a practice drill so we were invaded by around 50 snow machines. It was cool to see them work.
The coolest part was when two women brought up their sleds and dog teams for some practice. That was great.
All in all it was a great trip. No scout-cicles. The great part about camping at the end of the road... There is an open restroom for all the winter trail users.
Can't wait for the west desert next month!
