Not sure if you guys watch NOVA. For the 1st time in history, a machine will compete against the top jeopardy players. Kinda like when Deep Blue first challenged humans to chess. This will be a great moment in artificial intelligence if he wins. Here's a video showing the development. This is amazing IMO...

My first question was, will it be connected to the internet. Impressively, no it won't.

But still, we're talking about massive trivia data stored on hard drives.

By the way, for kicks and giggles, I made it possible to embed PBS Videos. Just take the video ID at the end of the url.

Example, http://video.pbs.org/video/1786674622 (http://video.pbs.org/video/1786674622)
Copy the 1786674622 and paste between "PBS" tags:

1786674622

Result:

1786674622

Oh sweet! Yeah I was wondering why it did not embed.

That was actually my first question too. But when you think about it. Even on a very fast connection, It could not perform a search fast enough anyways to beat a human. From what I observed it's really fast and questions need to answered in like 2 seconds or less. If you had to insert an internet query in there it would be unusable IMO. They never said what's its storage capacity was. They just mention is has entire encyclopedias, libraries, newspapers, and the entire wikipidia enclosed in it's banks. I'm sure that is an immense amount of data, probably at least 2 floppy disks worth. :)

I also like how the kids were getting upset when the host made fun of "him". This tells me the next generation is more willing to care about, accept, and perhaps even love machines that act human, or show human like characteristics.

With all this advancement though, we've still yet to create a replica of the human brain. I'm going to be amazed no matter what the result on Monday is. Cool time to be alive. :2thumbs:

Ok so watched the 1st 2 episodes, the final one is tonight. Torrents are up for anyone interested. So on one hand, I'm glad I don't have cable anymore. There is only about 10 minutes of content, the rest is pretty much commercials and back story/development, IBM saying how great they are and ushering us into some new future with their amazing technology. It's like one big huge commercial and I'm so glad for fast forward. But the actual "game" part of it is amazing. Watson destroys possibly two of the smartest trivia based humans on the planet. He had like $35k and they had $10k or so. It was amazing to see him play and this is definitely a huge leap forward in machines becoming smarter/better/faster able to serve our needs.

It did almost feel like cheating a bit though how they sent questions to him via text, while the other players were forced to see it pop on the screen. I'm sure Watson was already calculating and had the answer before most of the contestants had even finished reading the sentence. But that complaint is small because really there would be no way to make it fair. If he had to wait until Alex was done reading the question, the human contestants would have read it faster than that.

Anyways, it was really cool. :2thumbs:
