in april of 2005 i did a day hike from the end of the johns canyon road out to almost where i could look down into the bottom of slickhorn canyon.
start out by heading north of mexican hat on 163, left on 261, left on 316, then watch for a road to the right in about 3/4 mile. a 2wd is suitable to get you as far as johns canyon. about 1/4 mile past johns canyon the roads goes to 4wd. then it is several more miles until you come to a place that you just cant drive any further. it will be obvious. you could use a bicycle beyond here.
this area is just thick with petroglyphs. i found 20 different sites that day. it seemed like anytime i put the binoculars on a boulder with desert varnish there was something on it. lots of it just next to the road. pay particular attention to the boulders at the bottom of point lookout canyon.
