View Full Version : Idea - Hiking/Canyoneering Resume?

@Sombeech (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=6) , @accadacca (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=3) , And everyone else:

I think it would be neat if there is an option on our profiles, where we can list what canyons (for canyoneers) and hikes we have done.

People call it a Hiking or Canyoneering Resume. If people so desired, while adding to the social scene here, I think it would be fun and enlightening of what areas people have explored.

So if people want to know (or care for) which hikes/canyons I have done (and if I entered them of course), there will be a option under my avatar that says "outdoor resume" or something along that name which is easily accessible. And of course if they click on that it will redirect the to my profile - resume page. Or it could be a seperate window (or a hovering window) that pops up, so they don't have to leave their current position. Ehh...something like that.

Plus, that gives people another venue to ask me about a certain hike I've done and message me, and hopefully I will be able to give them a TR page and advice.

Make sense??

As a novelty, I think it would be a fun idea. Practicality; probably not much would come from that, but it would definitely would make coming and staying here more attractive.

What do you guys think?

I think the resume should say ... age, marital status, have a current photo and location.

sort of a my list is longer than yours kinda thing? list being a euphemism.

jman, If your interested in helping search for possible plugins this could expedite the process.

On the triathlete forum I joined they have a pretty cool way of posting your race and the info and having it connected to your profile and in the forum. Check this site www.beginnertriathlete.com it might give you some ideas of how. I only say that because I think if you start this resume type thing it would be more interesting if when you post a report, it connects to your profile as part of your resume if that makes any sense.

I think this one links to my profile on the site

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/index-weekly.asp?memberid=197383&year=&month=&day=

I only have the one race. But if you look on the right hand side under Planned Races > Race Listing > then under XTERRA Sport it will take you to the forum post.

I would like some way of having all my trip reports here that I have posted grouped together. So if I want to go back and look at what I wrote it is easier than going through ALL of my posts.

I totally agree with this. Putting a person's TR's all in one spot is an excellent idea. I could care less if you've hiked every mountain in Utah if you don't have any pics to prove it.

Yes...I like the way you guys are thinking. Thanks chere for the idea. Having a way to link the TRs under a single menu or instance would be a better option (which is the point of this "resume" idea).

A forum up here, on the clubtread.com website (http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/default.asp) has a separate section for Trip Reports. In everyone's profile, you can see a list/link to every thread they've started in the Trip Report section, thus giving a list of all their TRs. Works pretty well.

With the Trip Report prefix, it shouldn't be too difficult to code, I would think. We already have a list in the profile of all threads started - just do the same for all "Trip Report" threads started...

On a sidenote: I do like how this forum can set a thread pic. Gives you a sample before you read the article.............is this possible at all?

jman

So when we click on our names, The dialouge box pops up and has "View Profile, Private Message, View Forum Posts, Send Email." I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to add "View Trip Reports" or "Hiking Resume"...right? The hard part is just adding the connecting link to our profile, where we can import our TRs.

Then I suppose the next hardest part is parsing the TRs associated with our names, and auto-tagging them to our profiles and creating the links there. But of course, having the ability to edit the names to our liking...

I would look ACDC but have vbulletin isn't my speciality at all....I don't even know what to call this "feature"...

Cirrus2000

Better even than the links you list in the popup - if you go to the profile (click "View Profile") you can find the link for "View Started Threads (http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Thread)". This is the key - the SQL that finds the threads started by the user just has to add one more clause: " WHERE [prefix_field] = [TripReport_prefix]" - boom - you have your list of all Trip Reports that member has started... Doesn't need to be saved as a search, of course, the way that vBulletin does with all searches - can just be a dynamic list.

accadacca
01-19-2011, 09:32 PM
I like where this is going. Now we just need a few more programmers. :lol8: Hey somebody also mentioned (in another post) about having a stat under your "posts" and "threads" that says "Trip Reports" Keeping track of that stat too would encourage more TR's. Instead of just "posts" and you get all the crap I post. :haha:

I like the ideas here and as Kev mentioned, it doesn't seem too difficult. I have a few buddies that specialize in PHP and MySQL. I'll have to arrange a lunch with one of them and do some fast talking. We did have a couple BigShots join recently. I may just use that coin if needed. Usually its just a favor type thing or Beech and I figure it out.

OK, finally getting some time to browse through this thread. I'm watching the kids as my wife recovers from shoulder surgery, so I'll get back to this after 9 pm tonight and might get some time to work on it.

Kevin's got the right idea, I could put a link in each user's profile right on the side, under their avatar. I tried to do this with the "Threads" thing but fell short.

The link would be similar to what Kevin posted,
http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Thread but with &prefixid=Trip_Report added in there, and probably the &contenttype=vBForum_Thread changed. Plus substitute the userid=333 with the general $userid code so it would adapt to whomever profile it was posted in.

But I can't quite get it right now.

Trying to break apart that code, and I've gotta log off for a couple of hours again, but I'll be back later tonight. In the meantime if anybody can experiment with what to take out of that code, so they can see jman's "Trip Reports" only, that's the ticket. Then I can throw that link in the "user postbit" as it's called.

Good luck, I'll be on later tonight.

Sombeech

Yeah, we need to get @theking648 (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=15095) in here to take a look. Once we can create a link that will search trip reports per certain user, I'll be able to throw that link below the postcount, under the avatar of each user.

the search string we need to incorporate is prefixid=Trip_Report

For an example of how I got that, check out the url on the Trip Report index dropdown up in the navbar:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?13-Backpacking-amp-Camping&prefixid=Trip_Report

along with the search for threads started by jman:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Thread

Sorry, it's just too late for me tonight and I'm watching 2 kids. I've asked a few questions out on the interwebz about this too, maybe I'll get some answers by tomorrow morning.

this shouldn't be two hard to do, may have to write a new piece of code to pull from the data base but not hard.. my only problem is I don't know how the database is set up and which tables the certain data is stored, I'm not familiar with vbulliten's system but probably isn't much different than another site i manage that uses an SMF forum (http://www.wildsurvive.com/outdoor-camping-forum/index.php)

it's defiantly possible, and I'm sure I could do it. but I would have to spend quite a bit of time looking at the files an see if there is a php function i can use or if i need to write one, in the case i needed to write one i would need to find out which table in the database they are stored in.

theking648
01-21-2011, 09:10 PM
maybe just modify the search.php form to except a new var, then do a simple if statement to check if the first part of the string contains [trip report] using substr() function.

then just return the results that have the prefix

so the url would have a new var like &startsWith=[trip report]

this will also work for anything then like &startsWith=hiking

however this won't work if the prefix isn't appended to the title, in that case it may be in a different table which will make it a lot easier

This is what I was wondering. I, too, am not familiar with vBulletin, but if you take a look at the schema (ya got a PHPmyAdmin on that thing?) and it should be easy to spot how the threads are prefixed.

Another idea is to have, on the profile page itself, a list (with links) of the top 10 or 20 trip reports by that user, based & sorted on either most replies, or most views, so someone can get a snapshot of the groovy things folks do...

This is great, good job fellas.

Question - I assume it will automatically put the TRs in some arbitrary order under that link...if that's the case, would it be possible to organize it by year?

The search string can sort it any way we want, by last post, start date, etc

Sombeech

OK, we're getting somewhere. Here is the search string that will bring all of jman's Trip Reports:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report
(http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report)
and the same code, unlinked:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=333&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_ReportNow I'll work on setting the generic user to whichever profile it's on.

Currently, just replace the 333 which is jman's profile number with 6, to get mine.

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=6&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report
(http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=6&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report)
Or, any user's profile number, like CarpeyBiggs' which is 1887

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=1887&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report
(http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=1887&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report)
Plus, if we want a number next to the "My Trip Reports" link on their profile, I'll have to make some sort of a cron job that counts maybe once per day.

theking648
01-22-2011, 11:16 AM

Sombeech

No, all of this stuff is already available, it's just learning the different variables that you can plug into the search string. I had some help over at vbulletin. :cool2: So instead of &prefixid=Trip_Report as it shows in the Trip Report dropdown menu, it was
&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report and also changing the vbforum_thread to vbforum_post

One more note, to be honest I don't know how long it will take me to get this on everybody's profile. Time just isn't on my side lately. But if you'd like to put a link to your Trip Reports in your signature, maybe that's a start.

Here's what you can do.

Find your profile number by viewing your profile page, and it will be in the url.
Edit your signature by clicking this link: http://www.bogley.com/forum/profile.php?do=editsignature
Type something like "Check out my Trip Reports"
Color it, size it however you like
Highlight that text, and click the hyperlink button, looks like this http://www.bogley.com/forum/images/editor/createlink.png
In the popup, paste this code there, and replace the XXXX (located after userid=) with your profile number:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=XXXX&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report

and here's what it looks like:

Check out my Trip Reports! (http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&userid=6&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report)

I just got the link to post on everybody's profile, under their avatar. :afro:

I can title this whatever you like, maybe to make it more visible.

In the meantime, there are a couple of things that might be desired, like posting the # of Trip Reports you may have, but that ain't happening today :lol8:

Plus, if somebody doesn't have any Trip Reports posted, the link just won't return any results.

In the future, we'll have a better operating "Trip Reports" link up in the navigation bar up top, it will show the most recent reports coming in, sort them by forum, stuff like that.

You shouldn't be running into this restriction if you're logged in.

Each time a search query is made, it taxes the server. So if too many searches were able to be made at once, maybe by a malicious script, it could potentially crash the server.

It is through a hosting company

On the search thing, let me look into that. Does it happen every time for you? I just did 3 consecutive searches without the delay. With posting, we'll have to wait the 30 seconds for a similar reason, plus a spammer could post 1000 simultaneous messages at once if we didn't have that in place.

Huh, for some reason I thought I read that you hosted it on your own server.

Yep, every time. If I do the same search I have no problems, like if I hit "what's new" back to back. But if I hit what's new and then hit someone's trip reports link I get the message saying the forum doesn't allow searches sooner than 30 seconds apart.

I think it would be neat if there is an option on our profiles, where we can list what canyons (for canyoneers) and hikes we have done.

So now that one big step is completed, I'm coming back through the thread.

If you wanted to show your Canyoneering Trip Reports separately from your Hiking Trip Reports, there is a way to filter this further to look only in a specific forum. Of course this would not change the link in your postbit (the part under your avatar) but you would be free to make it your signature.

As for what the exact variable is for adding to the search string, I'm not sure yet but I can find it soon. It will involve the forum id. Like the Canyoneering forum is 15, Hiking is 27, Running is 52, and so on. You can see this in the url of each forum.

I'll look into this further if there is interest for it.

Yep, every time. If I do the same search I have no problems, like if I hit "what's new" back to back. But if I hit what's new and then hit someone's trip reports link I get the message saying the forum doesn't allow searches sooner than 30 seconds apart.

Anybody else having this problem?

Anybody else having this problem?

yes but only when I used the search code and replaced the XXXX with my id in the url. it happened every time and I'd get a message one search per 30 seconds you need to wait 3 sec before next search. After 3 sec, 30 sec, 3 minutes I'd get the exact same message.

But when I hyperlinked it in my signature instead of pasting in the url it would work ever time.

not at all. I followed nick's steps and don't get it. BTW, I am using Chrome 8.0 (latest version).

that would be great! A new signature with "Hiking TRs" and "Canyoneering TRs" in the signature would rock.

OK, here's how to separate the different forums. Grab the link to your Trip Report search, jman's profile ID is 333,

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report&userid=333and at the end add:

&forumchoice[]=XX

where XX is the forum number. So for Canyoneering, you would add &forumchoice[]=15

So, to see all of my Trip Reports in the Ski/Snowboard forum only, I would have this link:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report&userid=6&forumchoice[]=23

At first this only provided 3 Trip Report results for me in the snow section. I know I've done more than that, so I started digging around and it just turned out that I hadn't put the "Trip Report" prefix on them. So this will be the likely solution if you're not getting all of the results you're expecting.

How can you update a thread you have started to add "Trip Report" to it. For example, I forgot to set that on this one just recently:

When you edit the post, hit "Go Advanced" and you'll see more options, including adding a prefix in there. :cool2:
Also on the "reason for editing" box, an entry isn't required there.

Hmmm...I don't see that beech. Could it be that you see that 'cause of some admin status? Or am I blind? I could put "[Trip Report]" in the title but I don't think that will change the TR attribute to increase my oh-so-important total count of TRs :haha:

You know what, you might be right. For some reason it might be only moderators who can edit the prefix after it's been posted. I didn't realize that. I'll look for a way to change that. In the meantime, I've made that a Trip Report for you. And yes, you're correct, adding the text of "Trip Report" won't quite accomplish the purpose.

Yeah, probably because it's a link where the others are not. Let me see if I can color it the same. On the other hand, would it stick out like we want it to if it were the same color? Or maybe underline it or something?

Or I can just throw on some blinking rainbow text. :haha:

14ers.com has a user peak checklist that could be very similar to a canyon checklist.
Here is an example:
http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/usrpeaksv.php?usernum=12817

It is easy for the user to update and does not require a full-blown trip report, just checking off a box. The Site Admin may be willing to offer advice on the coding?

I like it. I think any enhancement to the user profiles would be great. Example: I love checking out people's profiles on summitpost and seeing what canyons, hikes, they have published. Scott P is a great example of this on SP.

I'm sure we could work something out. What kind of database size are we talking about? Canyons, hiking trails, I'm sure the bikers would like that option too.

What do you mean by size? There's a large database of canyons, hikes, peaks, mtn bike trails, etc. but it all depends on the purpose of it. If you have lets say a template similar to 14ers.com, and you click on the peak name it shows a pic and some of those links have links to the beta. What if that list, say for example, doing the Subway in Zion, and when the user hovers over the the link, it shows a picture of the Subway as a thumbnail, and if you click on the link it searches Bogley.com for all prefixes of TRs, with the keyword phrase - Subway. (I hope that makes sense, I probably didn't explain it too well).

Oh yes...hundreds upon hundreds of names. I can provide a giant list of canyons, and hikes in Utah. Of course this bogley, so the list would have to include other states, etc. which could get quite lengthy...

I wonder if the list for known canyons could/would be provided by the online beta providers (i.e. Climb-Utah, etc) ?

Candition.com has a list bigger than climb-Utah and most other beta sites. However, Candition is just a index and not a beta site.

If following the example of 14ers.com, you could just start out without beta and initially just offer a checklist. If I recall correctly, the initial idea of a "canyon resume" was floated in the forum. Anyone looking for partners would be able to see another user's checklist and wold presumably know something about the canyons on said checklist and then would theoretically be able to assess the ballpark ability of a potential partner at a glance.

The beta would be a bit harder to get, I supose, but this could at least be a starting point. The checklist on 14ers also serves as a way for people to keep track of their own accomplishements, not just a list for others to look at. All this could be expanded in the future to maybe include beta if it is well used.

These are just suggestions, I know nothing of the actual implimentation..

So to implement something like 14ers.com, would a new theme need to be installed? Or could it be implemented on the existing php?

where XX is the forum number. So for Canyoneering, you would add &forumchoice[]=15

So, to see all of my Trip Reports in the Ski/Snowboard forum only, I would have this link:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report&userid=6&forumchoice[]=23

So this will be the likely solution if you're not getting all of the results you're expecting.

Just bumping this up. I'm currently working on getting this link back under everybody's avatar and post count, but I keep getting interrupted at work, life, kids, play....

But in the meantime for those of you who would like to see all of your Trip Reports, or anybody else's for that matter, just COPY this link, PASTE it, and before you hit enter, EDIT the user profile number at the very end. 333 is @jman (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=333) and you can see your user profile number by looking in the url in your profile. Mine is 6, @Iceaxe (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=36) is 36, @Slot Machine (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=20293) is 20293... So here's the text you can paste into the url bar, and then erase the 333 at the end and replace with the desired user number:

http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?do=finduser&starteronly=1&contenttype=vBForum_Post&prefixchoice[]=Trip_Report&userid=333

Please note that when you hit enter, the url will then change to something like this: http://www.bogley.com/forum/search.php?searchid=631398

This is NOT a reusable link, so it will do you no good to just use that link as your Trip Report search. It must be that big long ugly thing. Please note that if you just copy and paste that into a thread or signature, it will break up too.

So for those who want to put a link in their signature, type the word "My Trip Reports" or whatever, then highlight the text, and add a hyperlink to that text. Otherwise it won't work.

Thanks and hopefully we'll have this up again soon.

..btw I just want to brag about having the most Trip Reports
