Hey All!

I thought I'd see what other explorers were up to in the states surrounding New Mexico and I found this forum. Glad to join and read about everyone's stories and recommendations.

Myself, I have spent months exploring the Sangre de Cristo Mountains years back... and now I am ready to get back on the wagon.

P.S. There are a lot of pics of hot guys in this community... an added bonus for me! ;)

off I go ~~~maya

Hey Maya! I was raised in Alberturkey from 1960 until I moved away for the last time in 1980. As a kid I explored a bit on the Sandia Mountains, a bit of backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness, did a lot of skiing at Sandia Peak, Santa Fe Ski Basin, most skiing at Taos, and a lot of hanggliding (in the 70's) around Albuquerque. I still have relatives there (Paseo del Norte and Wyoming) and in Ruidoso (Lincoln National Forest). I just got back from Ruidoso on Monday after spending 4 days there. My how Albuquerque has grown! Population was around 150,000-200,000 when I moved away and when I last visited a couple months ago (first time since 1984) man-o-man! Wyoming and Montgomery was the outskirt of town more or less! Of course there was development east up to Juan Tabo and the Abruzzos and family had homes at the base of the Tramway and that was about it. I'd like to get back one day and hike La Luz again and maybe do some climbing! Anyway...Cheers!

ststephen ~ Haven't been to Chaco Canyon for years but the Anasazi culture was amazing. When I was young we were allowed to explore the majority of the ruins but since then I think they have closed all or the majority of them to preserve it better... haven't been there in a decade but I'm sure you'll enjoy!

Bo-Beck ~ I was born here but... well, parents divorced and I ended up growing up in Austin then coming back here in late teens... It has definitely grown in the last ten years, most of the cities in the south seem to be growing at a high rate. It would be super cool to go hang gliding here! I love being here during balloon fest... I love being here during the summer.

I loved watching the Baloon Fest!
In 1971 I rented a hang glider from a shop down by UNM and got hooked, then got a job at Elecktra-Flyer working for Larry Newman and Ben Abruzzo building the frames for his line of Hang Gliders. I built my own first kite and got impatient and took it off of Sandia Peak in strong winds. Wound up flying to South Peak and then tried to penetrate into town. Couldn't make it and crashed into a pine tree, however was able to bundle up the kite, hike out to town, have my girlfriend pick me up, and still make it to the Jackson Browne concert in Santa Fe on time that evening! I ended up flying gliders for the next 7 years and then gave it up!

Bo-Beck ~ I actually had a cousin in town last week so we took the tram up to the peak for the twinkling lights... one of the fellow riders said that hang gliding was illegal off the peak but it happens a lot. He then told a horror story about someone who lost the current and ended up getting air lifted out of one of the canyons (echo canyon maybe?) breaking both legs and both hips. I think hang gliding is awesome though. My dad use to have an ultralite he would fly around the area a long, long time ago. I miss those days.

I also heard about a couple of opal/gold mines somewhere on the Sandia range... have you heard of any mines over there? Sounds like something I might want to explore come summer.

I had a childhood friend (I wasn't living in Albuquerque at the time) who was killed flying off of Sandia Peak, Mark Osterauer. It wasn't illegal to fly off of the peak in the 70's.

I had another friend who's dad was into lapidary, and worked with opals a lot. Not sure where he got his opals? The biggest feature I remember as a kid growing up was the Sandia Man Cave on the backside of the mountain (easier to get to from Placitas) and didn't know of any mines?

If you go to Chaco Canyon, do not miss the Bisti Wilderness just a bit northwest of there...really awesome badlands
