Historic Cable Mountain Draw Works Stabilization Project Completed
Zion National Park

Superintendent Jock Whitworth is pleased to announce the completion of a project to stabilize the historic Cable Mountain Draw Works in Zion National Park. The Cable Mountain Draw Works is an early 20th century aerial tramway that was used to move lumber and timber from the mesas of Cable Mountain to the floor of Zion Canyon. The structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Draw Works was originally conceived and constructed by Springdale pioneer David Flanigan, who regarded the Draw Works as a fulfillment of an 1863 prophecy by Brigham Young that lumber would one day be transported from the canyon rim

I've hiked to Cable Mountain several times, including a rather epic 17.5 mile dayhike from the east entrance and back in January with deep snow. Last time I was up there was in September, and I was a bit shocked to see the changes to the cableworks.

That was a few months ago obviously, so I don't know how it looks now. Like I said, I was a bit taken aback to see the 'historical' structure under construction, but I suppose it's better than letting it crumble off the side of the mountain, which it was just about ready to do.

I spent the night camped up there solo many years ago. The wind blew like crazy all night.

Many times, but the best was when Bo and I did a quick 25 miler up there one day.
