My wife has decided she wants to get into the computer age at last. Because of her health, she can't be going downstairs to use the pc and would like a laptop, or even a notebook. I'm looking for a place online that lists all the great deals, or any other place where I can find something good, but as cheaply as possible.

Netbooks are great, especially for beginners, and are built specifically for cruising the net and playing around online. I assume this is the kind of computing she'll be doing.

And they're cheap, averaging $300. Amazon will have deals on them, there are a few for $250.

I don't hear too many complaints about different brands. I do see a lot of the Asus' around, like this:

I have a NetBook (HP), but find the keyboard and screen size far too limiting. I'd be happy to sell it to you. It has an integrated Verizon broadband card and extra high-cap battery (reinstalled with Win7/Office2010).

If you're looking for a more functional sized computer/laptop, I find that Dell has great deals and thus far has not disappointed me in reliable hardware. Just hope and pray you NEVER have to phone or CHAT-in for tech. support (because you'll end up with "RICK" from Bangalore and he'll make you cry!).

Sombeech, thanks for the netbook suggestion. They are cheaper, but I'm thinking I agree with Bruteforce...My son has a netbook as well and with my wife's rheumatoid arthritis, I think the smaller keyboard is going to be a problem. And that's a problem that RICK couldn't help me with, even if he wanted to.:haha:

I had to replace my wife's laptop just before Christmas, I picked up an AMD powered Toshiba Satellite for $429.00 at Office Max. I think they've raised the prices but the Toshiba is really nice, 17" screen and a full keyboard.

Regardless of what brand you decide on, you can generally pick up a pretty good deal at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com).

they have cheap refurbished ones, I have one, i know people who have one and there are no problems that justify spending $500 more for 7 extra months of warranty for a new computer.

Asus IMO is one the best brands, I've never had a problem with their products...

:lol8: You probably won't believe this, but I don't even own a cell phone, and my pc is 5-6 years old (I think).

BTW, does HP still suck and use those proprietary boards, or have they improved somewhat?

Hey, thanks everyone for the suggestions. It's a minor miracle that my wife even asked to have computer at all...she won't use the desktop hardly at all.

Sorry I meant Dell. I like the Dell computers, but I am of course a Mac guy. So I would recommend a MacBook. :haha:

I use a plug-in mouse and keyboard with my laptop - can't deal with the odd size and feel of the on-board keyboard and pad (ASUS).

I like shopping at NewEgg, surfing the comments to assure I am buying something reliable... which works much of the time. Anyone want some wifi adapters that don't work with W7??

Doesn't mean you have to buy it there. But a great place for information.
