View Full Version : Moab Canyoneering Practice

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a place I could go this weekend near Moab to practice some canyoneering skills. It's been a few months since I took a technical canyoneering class, and I'd like to spend a weekend practicing again before I start heading out to the canyons.

I'd like to spend more time practicing than driving around looking for a good place, so I thought I would see if anyone has a good suggestion. Ideally, I guess I would just like to have a short cliff where I could practice anchors and rappelling for a day without a really long hike.

Thanks for your help!

Keith

Outstanding. Thanks, guys! I'll add it to the GPS and check it out this weekend.

hmmm, my coordinates must be off a little, from beeche's arrow, you still can't miss the cliff face, it's about a 40' wall.
I suggest walking up the wash on the right to gain access, it starts off the road due South of the arrow.

Is it the cliff past the end of Powerhouse Ln on the south side? Basically south-east of the green arrow?

Drive up Sand Flats Road--just past the dump turn right--follow road down to pulloff just south of green arrow--hike up wash--when wash splits below cliff band go left--find first weakness in cliff band and climb to top--several anchors on top--may be hidden under rocks--leave as you found!!

Kurt and Beech.... what datum are you using? I'm guessing the two of you are not using the same datum if waypoints don't match the map.

GPS waypoints should always include a datumn to be accurate. :2thumbs:

Good point Shane, I pulled this off google earth. I think I'm set up for Deg/Min/Sec Datum 84
But--I can't find my properties on GE yet, still looking.

I've rapp'd from those cliffs just near the toll booth up on the road, not sure if that's the coord's you were trying to show or not.

It was here, + or - 30 yards.... Not sure if it's still legal. But back then we just slept in the bed of the truck right there pulled off the road. This was before the newer toll booth.

No--This area is much better than up by the toll booth. The coordinates can't be off 100'. Possibly pilot error on my side.
How do I find my GE settings:crazy:

Oh, I see which road you're talking about, now. You're right...it doesn't look like it'll be that hard to find.

Thanks for the directions.

It appears that Google Earth uses the WGS84 datum, and it can't be changed.

FWIW: I find the datum problem is largest in the Anasazi ruins and rock art community. A lot of those guys use the NAD27 datum because they use the older USGS maps that had many of the ruins and rock art located on them (ruins and rock art are being removed from the USGS maps as they are updated). Tassoni also uses the NAD27 datum in his Cedar Mesa book. So if you get beta from one of the ruins and rock art guys don't forget to ask about the datum.

Kurt, your coordinates were dead-on. We went straight to the spot and found the bolts. That area worked perfectly for what I needed to be able to practice.

And I learned that I hadn't forgotten as much as I was afraid I had forgotten!

Thanks for the info!
