Last June I spend some time again in the Southwest and visited White Pocket and Coyote Buttes South again. Can't get enough of the area. :haha:
Especially White Pocket is still one of my all time favorite places and I'm sure I'm coming back to the area again. We spent the night camping at the White Pocket trailhead and there was basically no one there beside us. I think the cute little rattler I discovered the following morning doesn't count.
Unfortunately there were no water pools left, but even without the pools the area was incredible again. Trail conditions were harder than before, with lots of deep and very soft sand and many deep holes it it. I'm sure these holes were left from getting stuck in the sand. It was the first time I needed to deflate the tires of my vehicle while driving to White Pocket.

The day before I headed to the area I also twisted my knee and suffered a meniscus tear. I was wondering why it was so swollen and hurting while hiking all these trails. Didn't notice something was wrong until September. So I have to come back again and do all the scrambling and wandering around again without being handicapped.

Here are some of my images I took:

Yes, can you believe that!? We wrapped up last month's trip at Coyote Buttes North with about an hour of light left and made the mad dash out there to camp. We arrived at White Pocket just after the sun went down. We drove through the parking lot and admired the rocks from a distance and then drove back a mile or so to where we camped. I could see the White Pocket monolith from camp. During the night my friend became violently ill (food poisoning we think) and in the morning we had to call the trip and get him back to civilization. That's why I was trying really hard to put together a trip out there over New Years but a cold snap moved in and the temps were around zero. I'm hoping to finally get back out there next month, maybe March. I'd like to get there while the pools are nice and full for reflections.

This really sucks!! Basically being there and to get back as soon as possible. Hope your friend had a speedy recovery
Good luck for your next trip.
I also wanted to go back to the area. Hopefully with two healthy legs next time.

Dealing with my own knee pain and wondering what kind of treatment you are getting for your tear: surgery or physical therapy?

Thanks Tanya and HighPlainsPhotographer, I really appreciate it.

The tear was borderline, so my doctors recommended surgery. But I declined and tried PT instead. It worked out well so far.
Got most of my stability back, and even on the leg press I'm adding more and more weight. Right now I'm at 285 lb, I was at 350lb before the accident.
Still have some pain, especially when walking on uneven ground like now with all the snow here in Western New York.
Hope to start running again in Spring and that I can do most of the planned hikes this Summer.

I would love to go in winter. My first attempt failed
I tried once in 2009 shortly after a winter storm. There were so many snow drifts beside the sand, so I got stuck. :cry1:
I was the first one to drive on BLM 1066 after that storm.
