And Apple isn't letting its employees take time off at the beginning of February

It looks like the iPhone may long be coming to Verizon.

It looks like it might be finally going down. If it does iPhone (IOS) market share will skyrocket.

What I'm wondering is when they release the iPhone 4 for Verizon are they gonna release iPhone 5 in the summer like all the past models or wait until fall. I will most likely wait until the iphone 5 and possibly switch to verizon

iPhone 4 was a major hardware revision so I wouldn't expect a lot out change out of Summer 2011 iPhone 5. It'll probably just be a minor bump, much like the difference between the 3G released in Summer 2008 and the 3GS released in 2009.
I'm definitely on the ditch AT&T for Verizon bandwagon. AT&T has had such a huge advantage for the last 4 years and they totally blew it. If they committed more of their iPhone cash cow into more towers then nobody would be running away. Mega fail, AT&T.

Thoughts on this article? Is Verizon's network headed for the same demise when it gets clogged with iPhones?

Probably. The problem is those Iphone are bandwidth whores and Jobs doesn't really care about working with them, dude has an ego. There was an interesting article in Wired about it a while back I'll dig it up.
[QUOTE]The demo was not going well.
Again.
It was a late morning in the fall of 2006. Almost a year earlier, Steve Jobs had tasked about 200 of Apple's top engineers with creating the iPhone. Yet here, in Apple's boardroom, it was clear that the prototype was still a disaster. It wasn't just buggy, it flat-out didn't work. The phone dropped calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and applications routinely became corrupted and unusable. The list of problems seemed endless. At the end of the demo, Jobs fixed the dozen or so people in the room with a level stare and said, "We don't have a product yet."
The effect was even more terrifying than one of Jobs' trademark tantrums. When the Apple chief screamed at his staff, it was scary but familiar. This time, his relative calm was unnerving. "It was one of the few times at Apple when I got a chill," says someone who was in the meeting.
The ramifications were serious. The iPhone was to be the centerpiece of Apple's annual Macworld convention, set to take place in just a few months. Since his return to Apple in 1997, Jobs had used the event as a showcase to launch his biggest products, and Apple-watchers were expecting another dramatic announcement. Jobs had already admitted that Leopard

I watched a video with a new phone that is either the iPhone 5 or the CDMA version of the iPhone 4. The antenna design was updated and there were several other changes to the inside with projected improvement. The more I think about this, the more disappointed I am that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. I really like Verizon right now, and it isn't the increase of users that concern me but the increase in apple products. I don't know how much you guys know on the network side of things, but apple computers are bandwidth hogs. Macs literally take up to 3 or 4 times the normal bandwidth as a PC on a network. I don't know anything about the phone networks, but I would be surprised if the iPhones are not network hogs and that would thus lower Verizon's network quality.
On a seperate note, I read that the HTC Thunderbold (at CES) got 18mb down on Verizon's 4g LTE network in Vegas. That is amazing! Sprints 4g network only gets about 8mb down here in Provo.

Isn't it really the iPhone users that are the bandwidth whores? You can't really blame someone for actually using their device can you?

I feel you're a bit misinformed, bandwidth has nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with the software and network settings. Any device that uses data over a network is going to pull bandwidth based on the amount of data requested. Do you have any facts to prove the statement above or do you just have a dislike for Apple products?

I monitor networks as part of my job. Not phone, but computer networks. I can tell you from personal experience on dozens of networks that Mac computers use more bandwidth than computers running linux or windows. When I first saw the difference I was shocked. But using network monitoring programs, you can tell which computer is going where and what kind of bandwidth each user is using. The same people going to the same sites on PCs and Macs use very different amounts of bandwidth.

Verizon is keeping their unlimited data plans in place (or at least that is the rumor) so Verizon believes their networks will be fine. I really don't know anything about the iPhone bandwidth usage, versus any other manufacturer. I only know computers and can tell you that the difference is significant with computers and I would be surprised if Apple's phone programmers are better about bandwidth usage than their computer programmers but that could be a bigger concern for their phone team than computer, so maybe they are better.

I have no clue what you do for a living, but I can tell you that as part of my job I have seen this with Macs over and over on a variety of networks with very different end users. Part of my job exposes me to all sorts of areas of networking that most people never encounter.

I would also like to see something to back this up, your experience in IT is just anecdotal. Or at least provide a better explanation of why a mac occupies more bandwidth than a PC.

Right now I'm in management but my background is aviation. I was a mechanic and crew chief on RF4-C Phantoms, F-16 Fighting Falcons, and numerous large commercial aircraft, I also write aircraft and engine technical manuals plus I build and maintain PC's and networks on the side (I have been doing this for 10 years), I own both MAC's and PCs and routinely deal with network issues at a very large corporation (I prefer my MAC over my PC). I read your post and showed to the I.T. professional (who is a staunch PC Zealot) that sits right beside me and he validated what I wrote (he has 20 years of computer and network experience). So, that's my background, I can give you my I.Q. if you like but you still haven't provided any facts to your claim, I don't even think you'll even be able to google it so as ibenick said, your claim is only anecdotal.

I don't care at all if you believe me, or what your background is. My Dad has been in computers for more than 20 years as well and there are a lot of things that I know that he doesn't. That is the way it goes. Believe what you want, it makes no difference to me. But I can tell you what I know from years of experience from monitoring multiple networks. And with the programs we use, it is VERY easy to see the difference.

This is just like trying to talk politics with you, you get all pissed and start throwing around a bunch of rhetoric and anecdotal crap with zero substance. I've googled this subject trying to prove that there is something to your claim and I can't find a thing. Shouldn't there be some mention of this somewhere on the interwebs?

Seriously? You called my background in to question and I gave it to you. In my initial post, I asked you to provide facts for your claim and so far you haven't. It's a shame that I see more and more of these types of vitriolic comments in our society and as ibenick noted, politics are full of it. If people would just stick to the facts we'd argue a lot less.
There's no hiding from the truth or the facts, if you have facts to back up what you say, I will gladly agree with you. But, you haven't done that thus far. If you're right, the data should be out there.

I don't know why somebody would ask for more "proof" from DiscGo. The guy's expertise is monitoring networks and he's seen this first hand. If Macs take more bandwidth, it's not something to get upset about, that's just the way it is. When they are physically built different, operate differently, and vary in age, machines will cache things differently and this among other things will have a direct impact on how bandwidth will vary.
Even different models of PCs will vary slightly.

I don't think anyone is upset, except maybe DiscGo. I just want to hear something else to back it up. Anything at all! Is that so hard??? Shit, gimme a screen shot or something. A google result. Something! I'm honestly curious as to whether this could possibly be true and it seems the big shot making claims should be able to back it up with something.

If you guys ask around in the IT world, nobody knows everything. I have one of those jack of all trades master of none jobs, where I am exposed to a lot more areas of IT than most, but I am truly not a true expert in any area but I have a more general knowledge of IT than most people (including in the IT world because most people in the IT world specialize in one specific area and I haven't yet). When it comes down to it, if you guys don't believe me, that is fine. I could spend the time to record the networks and show you but that would cost me time for no benefit.

So back to the subject of this thread...
Looks like Verizon is going to allow the iPhone 4 to be used not just for tethering but as a mifi hotspot so you could use it to create a wireless network and connect up to 5 devices to it to get out to the internet. Soooo basically it sounds like the Verizon network is going to be in the shitter with AT&T even faster than anyone thought! :lol8:

Question...will verizon force me to buy a $30 unlimited data plan to use the iphone? I am already on Verizon and love my plan...I would love to use the iphone on my current plan. I am always walking around with my phone (calls/texts) and ipod (music/wifi) in my pocket. I'd love to have just the iphone and be done with that. I have no need for unlimited data, or any data at all for that matter. i am virtually constantly in a wifi zone and use my ipod on that.
It would just be nice to no longer carry 2 devices, but I don't want to pay for a data plan.
Out of luck or no problem?

Alright.... I got a question for all you IT geniuses....
I'm currently on ATT and have an unlimited data plan that I pay $10 a month for....
So how do I switch to an iPhone or a better smartphone and keep my $10 a month unlimited data? I've had the plan for a while and every time I talk to the guys at ATT about an iPhone the first thing they try to do is switch me to a $30 a month plan.
