Anyone want to share their opinions on a good ebook reader?

I just downloaded.... err.... I mean went to the library and checked out.... over 1000 books... most of them are the most popular titles at Amazon. So I thought maybe I should get a ebook reader so I don't have to read them on my computer.

The books I downlo.... err... checked out.... are all in the kindle format. But I did download a program called Calibre that is supposed to convert between all the different ebook formats... I understand there is a little war between kindle and nook.

Anyhoo... fell free to share your thoughts before I drop some coin on a reading device....

Ok.. I have owned a Kindle, My wife owns a Nook and I now use a Libre ebook reader http://aluratek.com/products/ebook-readers

I didn't like the Kindle, I had to fight with it a lot to get 'non kindle' books to work on it..
Both the Nook and the Libre work great with Calibre (I use the Libre due to its size and that it works good for me to take backpacking etc).. My wife loves her Nook and I wish the Libre was a bit faster when choosing different books but it isn't that bad to deal with... Oh ya I hated teh Kindle :)

I got my wife a nook when it first came out. She loves the nook WAY more than she loves me and at times I have become a nook widower. I finally got one and like it a lot. Where did you download..err...check them out from? I think it's a complete crock that ebooks cost as much if not more than print books.

I was spoiled for xmas and got the ipad it is freakin sweet!

Also Calibre works pretty well converting the books to pretty much any format. I just converting 50 books from the kindle .modi to .epub. I could have converted to PDF or whatever. Also there is a kindle app for the ipad/blackberry/etc which is cool.

Judging by your recent performance its obvious you can't manage a FF team from your iPad.... :roflol:

If I'm spending iPad type cash that is a requirement...

I went with the reviews and bought a kindle. Have not used it enough or ever used others yet to know if the reviews were right. I love Amazon though. So easy to order.

I gave my Dad a Kindle for Christmas. It hasn't been long, but I'll have to ask him how he likes it. They are sure popular...selling like crazy.

The iPad can surely run a FF team, it has a full browser dood. Yahoo also has a FF app that I use on my iPhone. I just suck at picking players...

I spoke to a couple who said they chose the nook over kindle because it was more universally accepting of ebooks. they seemed to suggest that the kindle was more limited. I have not checked into whether this is true. they also said if you buy books from barnes and noble you can share/loan them to others for a month or something like that. I'm not a big fan of B&N but they seem to be competing hard with amazon

Here is what I've found out so far....

There are a couple different formats for books, with kindle and nook being the most popular, but it really doesn't matter a whole lot because of a free program called Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) that will convert between all the different formats..

Nook has a lend feature.

Kindle added a lend feature last week.

Books on Amazon tend to be a little cheaper then B&N.

A lot of people have a major dislike for B&N that has nothing to do with Nook, not sure what that is all about....

If you really want an ebook reader you want the eInk, as it much easier on the eyes, as apposed to an LED/LCD/iPad/ect....

A touch screen is NOT a plus in a ebook reader.... and Kindle is the easiest to use.

Some have wi-fi, 3G or both.... if you have wi-fi at the house the 3G is probably money wasted.

The Kindle 3G is a free network, no extra cost for data transmitted or any of that crap. I have no clue how broad the network is or who's hardward they are piggybacking on....

The Utah library system's use the Nook format, so you can download from the library with no need to convert, which is a plus.

Just about any of the older classics (copyrights expired) are avaiable for free in any format you want on-line...

Everyone with a Nook says Kindle are junk...

Everyone with a Kindle says Nook are junk...

Best Buy carries all the different eReaders and you can go down an touch them all and see what you like the best.

A friend told me I could borrow his Kindle for a couple days and play with it and see if I wanted an eReader.

Anyhoo.... that's my take on things after looking around for the past week.... it's just my opinion and could all be male bovine excretment... I've still not bought one and don't know if I will.... if I were going down to buy one today it would probable be the Kindle wi-Fi version...

:cool2:

Anyone want to comment on the above feel free....

Those are great observations Ice. All things that I have heard as well. I have not used either for an extended period of time so I don't have much to add.

If you are looking strictly for an e-reader then either of these devices might be the best ticket. When I bought my iPad I was looking at replacing my home laptop. I needed it to do much more and it does. The iPad is closer to a laptop, but is specifically marketed to be somewhere between a laptop and a smart phone. The Kindle and Nook are primarily designed to be great e-readers. Gotta love this ad...smart marketing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFa4V10xS-o

Now you need to bite the bullet and buy one! :naughty:

And I probably should have added this....

Calibre has a feature that will allow you to read any book on your computer or laptop.

The iPad is NOT a good ebook reader.... it can do the job but that is not what it was made for and when comparing it to real ereaders and actual reading it just doesn't score very well....

Lots of apps for ipads, iphones, itouch and smartphones that allow you to read ebooks.... but none of them score very well when compard to the real deal.

Only plus side to an iPad is I believe their are apps that read both the popular formats (nook and kindle) without converting.

Great points Ice! If you don't read fairly regularly then it probably isn't worth getting an e-reader. If you are a book worm or read a lot then I think it's worth getting one. At this point I don't think either the nook, Kindle, one of the Sony ones, or another brand is too bad. When they first came out Kindle couldn't surf the web and the nook was hackable so that was the difference for me (even though I am not a fan of B&N). I know if you fan 'nook' on FB they have a free book Friday where you can download a free book (that they designate) every week if you have a B&N account (or your wife does). Probably not a big deal if your downloading them but more of an FYI.

I've heard the buttons on the Kindle are small and can be hard to press. The touch screen on the nook is a small strip on the base can be used to turn pages if the main buttons break (hasn't happened to me yet) and I haven't found it bad at all. The touch screen does auto-turn off after a bit too.

I would not say the Kindle is junk even though I am a nook owner but from what I have seen I am not in the norm on this (it's like the Apple vs PC)

B&N does have a free 3G network but I haven't tried to use it more than once and it worked fine (but I couldn't give you a good idea of coverage as we have wi-fi).

Like I said though I don't think either is horrible and I think I would be happy with this point. Good luck.

A couple more updates.

The Salt Lake Trib is now avaiable on Kindle for $3.95 a month (that's a bargin as it's about $35 a month for a hard copy delevered to the house). Right now the 15 day trial is free.

The Salt Lake Trib is already avaiable on Nook, not sure the cost.

iPad coming soon.

Amazon has a free book section, not sure what's in it exactly.

The ability to get the SL Trib might have me sold, only problem is I like the pictures in the real paper, not sure exactly what you get on the ereaders.

FWIW: The SL Trib you get for free on-line is not the complete newspapar. You can add the complete on-line newspaper for 3 cents a day if you subscribe.

I gave my wife a Nook Color, she loves it. And yes you can check out books at your local Library for Nook (pub format).
